Calhoun and City Lakes
Any observations on the ice conditions on Calhoun or the other city lakes? I am guessing that the snow isn't really there anyway, but hoping to at least start with reasonable ice thickness.
Re: Calhoun and City Lakes
I don't know about inner cities lakes, but waconia was great yesterday, (four wheels out at the ice houses) and Cannon seemed quite solid today. Snow was good at both. A bit deeper at cannon. Neither have a lot of bonding going on though.

Snow has bonded pretty well on Waconia today and conditions are great. Even snow depth around two inches with minimal cracks or pressure ridges so far. Spent 3 hours cruising this afternoon. With the cold forecast should stay in good shape this week.
Re: Calhoun and City Lakes
I was out on Calhoun today. I could see some shiny areas out in the middle of the lake that were either puddles due to water coming up through cracks or frozen puddles.
I was at the south end, fairly close to shore. I put in a bunch of ice screws to check the ice thickness and I looked at old ice fishing holes. Everywhere that I looked, the ice appeared to be clear, dark, and at least 8" thick. This is definitely not likely representative of the whole lake, so make your own observations/determinations.
There was about 1.5" of snow on the lake and it wasn't that well bonded to the ice, but I had no problem holding an edge.
I was stoked to be out on a crisp, sunny, beautiful day for some urban kiting...

I kited Medicine Lake today. 12 inches of ice. I parked on the ice. One inch of consistent snow cover, pretty much bonded. A nice session
Re: Calhoun and City Lakes
I kited on the S side of Calhoun today as well. The 2" of snow was bonded fairly well, better than Cannon yesterday, although Cannon had more snow. I ventured onto the shiny areas for amusement, they were solid as far as I could tell, ice fishermen holes and skate skier tracks going through it before I did; didn't seem like much point to exploring this though, kept to the better snow after that
.
Good to see Bruce & crew gettin' after it, excellent job staying up wind 2nd day out Richard, you're a natural at this!
Looks like conditions are lining up well on metro lakes for the next snow (Wed?), hope springs eternal.
Happy New Years Everyone
