Wind Advisory

Post by Prof Marc »

"VERY STRONG WEST WINDS WILL DEVELOP TUESDAY MORNING AFTER THE
PASSAGE OF A COLD FRONT. BY THE AFTERNOON...SUSTAINED WINDS ARE
EXPECTED TO BE BETWEEN 20 AND 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH. THE
STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED IN WESTERN MINNESOTA...WHERE
SUSTAINED WINDS COULD BE AS HIGH AS 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 50
MPH."

I haven't seen a forecast like this in Minnesota in the past 3 years. Can those with longer memories comment? A great afternoon of kiting on small kites? On very small kites (e.g., 7m)? Or potentially too gusty and too dangerous to be out kiting?

Sounds like great conditions for the ol 7 meter. I'm going to try to get to the Wac by 2:30. Who else will brave that crazy stuff? Hopefully it doesn't get quite that strong, I sold the 5 meter a while ago.

I hope I'm wrong but I think NOAA is waaay to bullish on their forecast for gusts to 40 tomorrow. If rain doesn't wreck it I think they'll be a nice session in the morning followed by lighter winds and then stronger winds later in the day. Iwindsurf is also calling for mid 20s at ml all afternoon but I don't see that either unless isobar maps and 10 day mrf has been wrong the last week which rarely happen. The center of low is too close to ml for big winds til Wednesday when it moves east. I do think Wac is the best place and they'll be good wind later afternoon and on but not crazy wind.

I'll bet on the big winds to come behind the front on Wednesday. Should be a cold windy (20-30+) day and we have to hope the rain doesn't mess it up.

Enjoy fall winds and then a series of nice sunny calmer days.

I still think it will blow good later today, especially at Wac because it is further s and west (further from center of low) but still will be surprised if it's blowing 40 (20s makes sense there). Could be a lot more wind at Wac then up at wb, not to mention direction (sw-w) much better for kiting. It's one of those days where the wind could be dramatically different 50 miles apart. Wednesday will blow all over state but be a nastier day.
Dave Z - enjoy - it's my turn to do the soccer game and practice tonight....
