SUP rentals
Who's renting SUPs around the cities? I'd like to rent 2 of them for some day next week. I have yet to try it out. Seems like a fun thing to do on a no wind day.

Re: SUP rentals
My girl and I have rented them at lake Calhoun a couple of times. I think it was $15 an hour.
Re: SUP rentals
Some of the county parks around, too. We're gonna check out Lebanon Hills - I think it is $10 there.

Hey Jeff,
Glad you're building curiosity to SUP. I had a closed mind to it for close to a decade and have enjoyed watertime almost everyday this summer because of it. Yesterday I enjoyed the two hour 20-30mph window for window, saw the lake glass off for sunset and later went out for the moonrise. We often do a yoga class on the boards and relish the various eco adventures we can go on with them. If you do rent, be sure to get some basic instruction. I still see people out pulling on their bottom hand, setting themselves up for an elbow or shoulder injury.
SUP has worked well to counter a lot of the should injury I've sustained from years of windsurfing and kiting. You're really working the push instead of pull muscles, besides strengthening your core.
Like windsurfing or kiting, it's a great way to clear your head, especially in these crazy times.
Yes, Calhoun rents them, Tally's in White Bear, there's Lakes SUP, Twin City Paddle, Minnesota Stand Up Paddle, MNSurf, and I've been working with a fleet enjoying the experience of turning others on to this great ride. My site isStandUpPaddleAndSail.com because I like to throw the sail on when the wind blows, use the paddle when it doesn't. It's great for cultivating the "No complaint, no complaint" attitude. Sure wish we would have introduced the paddle back in the early '80's.
I'm planning to bring my fleet down to Thomas Beach, Lake Calhoun, tomorrow for the Star Tribune Beach Party. I'll be doing free intro lessons and demos most of the day, so feel free to drop on by. That goes for any of the rest of you willing to give something new a try. Again, it took me ten years to drop my closed mind to this sport. And then again, we tried selling snowboards in 1987 and it didn't become a viable industry until 1994, thanks to the closed minds of most ski areas.

Re: SUP rentals
Hey Randy -
What time will you be there?
I've been talking about it with Davin for my family. It would be great to see the difference between the 10' Starboard convertibles and the SUP-only monster sized boards. (Kids are jazzed on windsurfing, but a 150 is still too small for them). Dawn has been resistant to all of my encouragements to wind-loving activities, but SHE was the one who is interested in the SUPs. Cool.

Re: SUP rentals
I'm winging it, but plan to be there from 9-noon. I'll stay longer if more SUP activity gets us into organizing an impromptu race or some other event to promote the support.

Re: SUP rentals
The whole family met Randy out at Calhoun today. I didn't realize that Randy is (a) retired from the House altogether, and (b) is giving lessons, sessions, etc with his fleet of SUPs. Nice stuff, works great, and I hear that there is Yoga added in his instruction to keep one balanced.
What an opportunity to try a bunch of different boards at the same time with the kids, and get tips from The Zen Master. Even got a water-side view of the Milk Carton Boat Races. Dawn and the girls are jazzed. I'm excited, 'cause those SUPs can take a windsurfing sail...(Ha! they are going to be begging for a sail when the wind picks up!) The House has a big selection, so we're off to see what we can get into.
Thanks, Randy!

Re: SUP rentals
Yes, Thanks, Randy! It was really fun to give it a try, and your instruction was top notch - a combination of physics and tips on being one with the order of the universe

Re: SUP rentals
I've been wanting to buy an SUP but don't quite have the dough since we just bought a new house. I did however buy a Kahuna Big Stick for 'Land Paddling' on my longboard skate. This thing opened up a whole new way of riding and a great alternative on light wind days when kiting is out of the picture.
Check it out at http://www.kahunacreations.com/bigstick

Re: SUP rentals
Yes, Jerry had his at the Swap this year and I got to try it. I've been amazed at how similar the feel is to on-the-water SUPing. Jerry's the king of finding fun and I agree, boarding with a stick is very fun, whether with land or water.
