Cannon Lake Monday?

Post by xrdave »

Will anyone be at Cannon lake on Monday? Looks like there will be 20mph or more, from S or SE. Can anyone tell me if either of the launch spots is OK if the wind is slightly SE? I am hoping to come over from Rochester, if there will be others out.

Cannon, "hopefully," will be sick tomorrow! Not sure what your riding but the North end of the lake is the spot to windsurf on South wind. Not a great kite launch though. People generally drift launch from the eastern side of Cannon. Not the park on the far sourh end but a tiny peninsula where fishermen tend to gather. See ya out there.

I'm thinking 10 ish. At the north side park. Scope it out. Make a plan.

SE works fine at Cannon, but PLEASE if you are kiting respect the fisherman on the point on the east side of the lake. They are locals (I am, too) and some of the older fellows have been fishing there for decades. With the holiday tomorrow (and the walleyes biting) there may be some fisherman enjoying the day right where you want to launch. I have been kiting solo at Cannon for a number of years and have developed relationships with some of these guys to the point where they will pull their lines out the water and allow me to walk my kite south up the shore and drift launch from the point. They have also been gracious enough to pull their lines out when I'm coming in. Typically, it's just me riding and so the imposition is not so great.

Unfortunately, I've also had to do some damage control with the fisherman when small groups of kite boarders have come down from the Cities, rigged up around the fisherman's vehicles and then walked into the water directly in front of their lines. I'm on the fisherman's side on this one. Over the years I have occasionally passed on a session at Cannon, in prime S-SW conditions, when I've driven to the lake and found a half dozen people fishing in the "kite launch." I mention this as a heads-up: in recent years there has been some bad blood amongst the local fisherman about the "kite guys from the Cities." The site is what you'd call an unimproved rural non-access; there are no rules, only local customs, that dictate who gets to use it and when. In the event of a dispute, the county sheriff WILL side with the fisherman. Please, keep it cool.

Thanks for your consideration.

Bill, thanks for the heads up. I will be mindful of the fishermen. It might even be too windy for them.
I will try to be there before 11 am

Thanks for the intel Bill. I'm looking forward to my first ride in the water on this lake and don't know the local sentiment, this helps tremedously. I've ridden a few times in the winter but eager to play today. On my way in a bit, hope to join you and others.

Great group on Cannon today. Assisted launches from the park and boat landing worked ok with SSE winds. Wind was spoty. Locals very friendly and helpful. Good Times My Friends!!!!

It was such a pleasure meeting more people from the 507 area code and enjoying southern MN generosity. It was so nice to see the scene working well including pre-ride clean-up, safe launches, landings and shuttle rides. All we need now is a drink service and massage tent! Seriously, thank you to all that helped me have a great first experience at Cannon. I look forward to seeing you again and continuing to contribute to the scene. Cheers!
