Brainerd lakes area this weekend

Post by Eric S »

I've been emailing with Jason and we are going to (tentively) hook up at McD's at Garrison Friday at 9AM if the 10-15 MPH forcast holds.

Sounds like the winds will be from the south. If there is some snow on Mille Lacs I'd like to take a look at the north shore. So many good water kiting memories up there. I remember last year that Matt K and Joe L headed up to Izaty's when we bagged and hit Clearwater in Annandale. Matt told us that it was the best wind ever!

If is doesn't look good at Garrison, we'll probably head over to the Brainerd area and check out those lakes. Too bad I will not have my new digital camera until Saturday. I'd like to take some pictures so we can see what it's like. Jason says the lakes are white, that's all I need to have fun snowboarding! Bonus if there is drifts and loose stuff but I'll take hardpack any day over ice.

Jerry S said he was interested in heading up there Sat morning if there is 10mph and snow.

I'll try to give a report ASAP upon return on Friday.

I don't have a cell phone but Jason might (look at some other posts). If someone wants to take a chance tomorrow, join us!

Wind is not looking great for Friday either. We could check the wind early in the morning and make a call.

Eric, if you want to call me early Friday to make a decision about McD's Friday morning at 9:00, feel free.

I was thinking about getting up at about 6:30 and checking conditions. I think that I will come up whatever the wind. I need to see some snow!

Perhaps a better rendezvous might be at the public access on 371 at north long lake at noon. This way you wouldn't have to come out to Garrison, plus the wind sounds better later.

Here's a picture of the area, you will see a mark on the bay on Long Lake where we might meet if others want to make it:

I'll post somthing here in the morning to as to my plan.

Thanks,
Lars

N. Long 371 access sounds good to me. It is easy to find just North Of Iven's resturant on 371. Also Gull lake and Round lake accesses are only a few min. away if the wind favors a different site, where on Mille Lacs a person could spend hours checking out differtent sides of the lake. If anyone wants to stay overnight let me know. Lars

OK, noon at North Long Lake access on 371. I drive a Maroon Astro Van. I'll be swinging by Mille Lacs since it is on the way for me.

Update: Lars, Jason and myself kited at the 371 lauch on North Long Lake then moved to the south point where the lake restricts, got to kite in the big lake with side-off winds.

After the snow squall passed the skies cleard and the wind picked up. It was a wild ride out there. The snow completely covers the lake in most spots and ranges from 1 to 3 inches.

I blew up my old snowboard and tried out the new Raptor Kitesnowboard. That work kewl. Wind died around 4PM and we split.

I'll go there tomorrow if there is 10-15. 18 got about an inch of snow between mille lacs and brainerd while I was there. The road was kind of snowy comming home. I hear an alberta clipper is comming wich might dump 1-3 inches tomorrow.

I probably plan on going to the south point. Take a right at Brainerd Internation Raceway on 371 and go straight to the lake. The access is right next to the point. You can drive cars on the ice. The point is right where it says "Long Lake" on this map next to BIR.

Hey Jason, etc.

I think we are going to try comming up tomorrow (Sunday) today it looks like the wind will show up too late. NorthW or N wind on Sunday around 10kts will be good at north long lake. We'll post here tomorrow if we are heading up.

Today we are going to snowboard at powder ridge in the morning.
