Kite Gathering on Mille Lacs

Thought I'd start a second thread on this... since there was a bit of confusion about dates.

Dates: Feb 19-20th With a wind date of the 26-27th
I think we should make the call on whether or not we do it as planned on the 19-20th by Weds the 16th. We should be able to get a decent read on the wind by then and figure out a location based on the direction of the wind. Might be helpfull for someone up that way to check out the road and ice house locations, so we have a large untracted area to play.

Todd mentioned Garrison Sports has ice houses to rent and will put them where we want them. We need to determine a location to give him. GPS coordinates? I like the idea of a small cluster of ice houses as a base camp. Hoping for some late night riding under the stars, maybe a bon fire. Maybe we could just choose a location early Saturday morning once we arrive and he could deliver the house(s) while we play.

Scott, since you've been taking the lead on this do you want to make the call on whether not it's a go the first weekend, say by the 16th? I can provide a second opinion on the wind if you want.

If you're thinking of staying in a hotel, you might want to make a reservation for both weekends. I think they only require a 48hour notice for cancellations.

If you're interested in doing the ice house option, I'd call Garrison Sports. I'd assume we're going to be at least 2-5 miles out on the ice.

Hey Scott,
If I can help in anyway let me know. Mike and I have kited in front of Garrison all winter.
The roads are wide and Garrison sports cut down the ice if it buckles up on shore.
I saw alot of cars out
in the last few weeks. The snow cover is good, maybe about a foot. It has become alittle crusty now, but smooth and fast.

I'm really sorry guys, this is just meant to be a gathering, nothing is set in stone other than the days it will be on, it's up to everyone to decide if they are going to come up or not. It IS A GREAT HELP THOUGH that people like yourself that have been in the area give updates the closer the dates get so that people can make good choices on where to stay if they are staying up there or if there is going to even be any wind. I'm hoping this just becomes another gathering like we do in the summer, everything just to really work out for us in te summer, weather & wind have been just the best and I'm hoping the winter gathering has the same. If people want to bring tents and stay on the ice, thats awesome I think, if people want to bring grills for food thats awesome to, this is all about getting together and celebrating the awesome sport of Kiting and meeting new poeple and seeing people we have not seen for a long time. So I'm hoping people will just come and enjoy being outside and doing what we all love to do Kite. I hope to see alot of people that weekend!!!

not sure what you are sorry about scott. I think everyone is thinking along those lines. We've been very lucky on the summer gathering to have wind and we've been able to do what we love, ride. I originally threw out the idea of a second "winddate" weekend to ensure we have a decent forecast to work with. Unfortunately that then makes it someone's call to decide if the first weekend is a go or not. I know that sounds like planning or structure which is what we've tried to avoid...but ultimately could make or break the weekend.

Let's simplify it.
It's a go for the 19-20th unless someone posts here by end of day on Weds that it should be moved to the following weekend, either due to extreme cold, no wind, rain, etc.
