How long does it take?

Post by rudeboysaude »

Yo all..

So I'm bummed today. How long does it take to get this kiteboarding down? I tried to take out the big Warrior today after work in light winds like it's supposed to handle and I couldn't get constant pull out of it. Kept falling over. To top it off, I lost my sweet ice screw on that lake in the madness and I'm sad..
Last week I went out in too high of winds and got spanked hard and broke my bar and was going super speeds on my board with no control.
I just started this fall but can't figure it out yet. Maybe because I've never seen a person actually do it and just trial by error? I learned to roll a kakay in class II rapids though by watchin a video. Hmm. Even took to rock climbing by reading a book.
I guess I'm wondering how long it took everyone to actually feel like they knew what they were doing with this kiting or if I should sell all the hundreds of dollars of stuff I bought and just get myself a sweet new spud boat this year.
Any words of advice from the veterns? I flew the hell out of my trainer, but that doesn't even compare to the real deal and you guys know it. I do like getting dragged, but I can do that behind my car! Any words of encouragement would help I guess. Tell what I'm doin wrong so my woman doesn't have a reason to make me sell more of my toys!

Stick with it mon, it'll come.

Obviously a lesson could help, though I realize your location makes that challenging. You're are right, riding with others goes a long way, not just watching but asking questions of others.

Also you have to make sure you are in right conditions for your gear.

Without lessons, I would suggest checking out some of the videos, How to Rip, Boost, Kiteboarding 101. Unfortunately, they all deal with water riding and winter riding is slightly different.

If you can, come up and ride with us or come up and take a lesson.

Also if you describe in detail what's going on when you're having difficulties we might be able to discuss it here.

Don't give up, it is worth every frustrating moment.

Yeah..

Thanks Tighe. I'm gonna keep tryin. I still haven't even flown my inflatable yet. Trying to do it all solo is a little bit more difficult I think. That's why foils seemed so much easier to setup and take down alone. But I'll keep trying. I've got nothing else to do with my free time, especially in the winter. Don't think I'll be good enough to keep myself up on water, but maybe I'll just get myself a mountainboard and hit some fields here. Sooner or later something has to happen. And I'll try to make it to the Kitefreeze to see if I can see anything I'm doing wrong by watching you cats. Thanks man!

Rude,

From all the guys that post on here I'm probably the closest to you except the bros in Duluth. I live in Zimmerman, MN which is about 40mi S of Lake Mille Lacs in hwy 169.

Since we've had so much now latley, Mille Lacs should be good now. Since you are about 20-30 miles from there, we should hook up and fly that lake.

All the water kiters dream of getting up there cause the wind is so s m o o t h since it crosses no obsticals on the lake. Problem is in the summer is the wind sometimes never gets there, plus it's a far drive.

later,

BTW: You will have an "ah-ha" moment if you see someone do it. It's really not that hard. By doing all those other sports that you do you will either figure it out on your own or see it once and say "ah-ha!" and say to yourself, "why didn't I think of that before.."

Rude Dogg,

Don't give up. I've been kiting for a few years and I still have moments that require a mild sedative. Just hang in there and like Tighe said, come to one of the jamborees. You'll learn a lot just by watching others and will want to push yourself to try new stuff.

C ya out there,

Brad

(I previously posted this under the wrong thread...oooppps!)
Have kite, will travel.

Rock on man..

Eric if you want to drag me with sometime I'd love to come and fly with you. I definatly need to see someone else and watch them in action. I have this friday off but then have to shoot back to the homeland of New London/Spicer for the weekend. Maybe since you're the one sacrificing and takin the "new guy" with you should tell me when to be there and I'll try my hardest to make it.
And thanks for the pep talk Brad. I'll do my best to get this in my bag of tricks too so I can ride with you guys sometime!

Bring a kite out there. Green is one of the best lakes in the state for windsurfing/icesailing/kiting. We might be around Dassel, MN this weekend on lake Washington for some kiting. I'll post If we go.

HURRAY!

I went out to the lake that pissed me off monday and since there was absolutly no wind there I walked the lake kicking snow looking for my ice screw.. In under an hour, when my patience was just about up.. I heard the clank of metal from my boot kicking it! I danced a little jig in the middle of the lake and threw my clenched fist hand and ice screw into the air like it was Excaliber. I even repaired my broken trainer bar.. Check out my new "slingsho" model for the B2 trainer. Complete with full wooden core! hahah.. I'm back! I'm back I'm pissed! I'll try try again!

Yeah! I took the advice man and brought my 6m foil to Green Lake this weekend. The wind was blowing good for a while so I took it out. Even got my dad to help me set up the depower. I had an awesome time! That thing flew sweet. I even managed to go upwind and flew for a good hour without any blowouts! I had an awesome time and my kiting love has been renewed! My dad got one good pic of me cruising upwind so I'll post a link for you! Thanks for the boost of confindence all!

Sweet! A few more good days on that 6m and you will be yearning for more power in light wind. You might want to hang on to the Warrior for a bit. You won't find another big powerhouse as user-friendly.

Dog, your going to have to pay some dues to get this sport down, but trust me, it's well worth the price of admission. When you first start, every session good or bad is a learning experience. There's alot of little tricks that make big differences and you'll figure them out with time.Hey! if it was easy the girl scouts would do it, right! Ride till ya bleed.Oh, and one other thing, your bar isn't broke unless it's in two.
