Snow Day on the Mother?

Post by JAE »

Tomorrow looks good and windy up on the mother. Any crazies thinking of going out in the snow? I'm thinking of heading up around noon. Have to be up that way anyhow on Saturday.

Yah, I tried hooking my chicken loop to a giant peice of drift wood, it worked great until the kite shifted and flew accross the window and ripped the drift clear off the ground, i tried grabbing the bar but it was to late, the kite was already on a down spiral(this was my ten)! luckily i didnt get hurt to bad, got jerked to the ground with a mouth full of sand! glad i was using my leash that time. it all happen in a second. i was done right after that!

I think Jon’s ailment from swallowing part of the Lake can be found at: http://www.dhmo.org/

As for today’s session – Chris, Jon and I got outside Windsurfing as far as the inside if that makes any sense... The wind died off for a little when we first got out, but then started ramping up pretty big after a little bit. Unfortunately Dave, I think that was about the time you tried your kite. For a while there, the wind was all over the map. Up, down, shifty and gusty. Unusual for a northeaster.

It seems a bit ironic that I’ve been holding out for a big day to sail the lake for the first time this year, and it ended up being a day in May with a snow storm and 36 degrees.

Anyway, sailing was a blast, except for trying to read the terrain with only one eye. It was nearly impossible to keep both eyes open with sleet hitting you in the face that hard.

We are an interesting group of people. On one had we tend to be incredibly optimistic. (I think the wind is picking up! That little cloud over there will force the air down and give us wind! I'll TRAVEL, and there will be wind there). We also tend to be complainers (I wish it was windier, less gusty, I wish the girls on the beach would stop distracting me with their bikinis). But after 25 years on the water, today was the first time I had to complain about how hard it was snowing.

Some people you just can't make happy

Hey Chris,

The Buddha sat under the tree to make the profound statement that "Life is dukka". Many have translated this to mean 'suffering', but the real sanskrit translation is 'restlessness'. Perhaps the most difficult trick in life is to be grateful for the gift that's given. It takes the 'half full/half empty cup' to a new level, the 'always full' cup. You exemplify the life of 'no complaint/no complaint', Bart Vervloet founded the saying 'Attitude is everything', and Phillip Money has long promoted the 'no whining' command. Wind and the opposite sex seem to push us to our limits with this, the embracing of what we're handed in patience to meet the surprise of the next moment. Personally, I can't think of a time where I've not seen you in complete joy and I can't say that about many people, so your post deserves Geoff's rating of 'excellent' and I don't feel quite as bad about accepting my condition that limited me from a trip up there that morning.

So happy to see you guys got some riding. At 3:00 when I go there it was just raining down at the lake and I wasn't sure about going out by myself. The wind and lake looked great, but lots of rain. I spent the night in duluth and was treated to a bunch of snow when I headed south early in the morning. Pretty cool to have a white world on May 8!

Randy, thank you for your thoughts. You make me think, which is something I should do more often. I posted your quotes on my desktop, and I am looking forward to your grin the next time we are on the water together.
