First day in South Padre Island

Post by Mike Kellett »

Got here Monday night. Tuesday morning woke up to 7m winds and cold rain. Since I am just 7 months out of
rotator cuff surgery I decided to wait until afternoon. Went to the North flats, which are not flooded, still raining and about 60 degrees. Northwest wind.

Not surprisingly there were only 5 kiters there. I rigged a 9m Rev and had a great time. No problem with the shoulder.

For those of you coming down soon, bring warm clothes and plenty of rubber. I used a 4/3 steamer, and I saw two dry suits.
They tell me that people are using 5/3 steamers in the Gulf and 3/2 in the Laguna. Hopefully it will warm up soon.

For those that didn't read my classified ad we still have space in our rental house. Much nicer than a motel.
Check my ad for details.

GLAD U HAD A SAFE TRIP! Say "hi" to the housemates. I'm sure everyone appreciates the wetsuit advisory. How's the shoulder? Darn, wish I had ridden along. Boost a couple & slam some Shiners for your buds back home. :mrgreen(green with envy)BTW:
Are the flats still flooded at high tide? I almost drowned my rental unit last time.

Jim, shoulder is holding up well. I've had several sessions this week and no problems. Even bought a new skim board and put some time into learning to ride that. I just have to avoid doing something stupid. Tides are extremely low and the flats are like a big beautiful beach. No puddles.
It was warming up with some south winds Thur and Fri, but a cold front just slammed into us an hour ago. Winds from the mid 20's gusting to 37. I'm heading to the flats now to check it out. Might be able to use the 7. Low tonight 48 degrees.
We are supposed to get warm south winds next week.

Skimboarding is fun, even tried it using a bungee one time, pretty interesting.

seems like you took the warm weather with you though, its been below 40 the past few days down here.

What a bummer. Patty and I went to look at some real estate between 12-1pm and that cost me the chance to get up to the north flats. The spring breakers have this Island covered. In the mid to late afternoon the Boulevard is backed up from beach access 5(directly accross from the N. flats entrance) all the way to the bridge and beyond. I can look out at the bridge from the KOA and it is backed up with cars clear to the Port Isabel side. Mike was right the wind came in with a bang blowing 30-40mph. The good news is that most of the springers should be leaving today. Can't wait to see all my Homies!
