Building a rail
hey duluth crew, so on these light wind days ive been looking at making a wood rail. so far this is how i plan on it looking. it will be portable and the top part will be hinged so i can fold it. its gonna be 12'. any ideas on what the surface of it should be? Plan on testing it on rice or island next good wind!

Don't know much, I have never rode a rail. But, I would suggest angling the ends down to make the transition easier.

Dave, try using that plastic type decking material for the top piece, however it really should be steel for snowboards, or much harder plastic. The edges will dig in too much and you'll end up catching them and taking a digger. If you can go with steel conduit on the edges of the plastic edging material, sticking up above the plastic about 1/4 inch.

Re: Building a rail
Just looked through my scrap lumber. I was hoping I ha a piece of TREX for the top rail. It is made out of recycled plastic bottles and cedar chips. So it is softer than wood. Has no splinters or slivers. Would be easier on the skis and board bottoms. It is easy to sink the screws and the material swells back and burys the screws. The disadvantage would be weight. More weight than wood. Expense and It is not structural. so requires a frame. If you could get a big strip of teflon plastic for the top layer it would be even better. But due to expense you need a benefactor to donate the expensive slippery top layer. Sorry I could not find that piece of TREX I thought I had. Good luck with that. I think I am too old to kite near a fixed object. But I will watch.

monkey, thats a great design, but its only 5' long, im looking at 12'. Tom, I might try looking around for that material. I really dont want to put a great amount of money into this, but id like too have it so it wouldnt ruin a board. great ideas guys, thanks!

Re: Building a rail
get two.
Slap in a tapered (slightly tapered) insert in the ends and bolt from the bottom....
I dunno... For as much dough as you're gonna spend building one, I'd get a crappy one first to see if I like riding rails...

Re: Building a rail
Here is a rail I just completed a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully it gives you some construction ideas. It is 40' long, 5' tall at its highest point and 12" wide (I am cutting it down 1', 5' is too tall). It breaks down into 5 8' sections for easy transportation. I will have it at the crossing this year for everyone to try out. Give me a shout if you have any questions on your construction. six one two three zero eight two 486.

Re: Building a rail
A couple of basic 12 foot rails I have at home. Simple to build. The white PVC top works/slides well but is not all that durable.

Nice Kurt ! looks like a fun lil park !
Jeremy's rail is smooth cannot wait to session that thing again!
Graham there will be some rails at the crossing, would be great to have some help setting up taking down and I would be more than happy to share my knowledge on building rails etc.... we can do a rail clinic/session at the crossing if people are interested.
