Saturday: Milly or The Mother? Or Clear Lake?

Post by Geo »

The Mother won't likely be cranking, but might be a good 15-20 knots and have some decent waves since it is supposed to be NE 15 knots on Friday, too.

The MRF shows that Milly will be likely stronger than the MOS graph is showing, but ESE? Maybe gusty?

Well, Mother delivered yesterday. It was an elusive day. I got up here in the morning and a couple kiters were rigged at Tott Lot. No one at 22nd, and when it looked like it was marginal 16m, there just didn't seem to be enough to get out to the wind.
Mike (14M windwing) claimed the wind came in good about an hour after I left. I had gone to Bluesfest, checking Sky Harbor. The reports were 4-6 when Mike would have been loaded on his 14m, just to give you an idea of how difficult it is to know what's going on unless you're here.

Anyway, got a great session in from about 6-8pm. It was marginal getting out, but fully wound on the outside with sweet terrain. I know some of you won't believe this, but truly, 7.5M on Mother really works well. The waves slow down and allow riding a lot more like the ocean. The wind was definitely venturing into the channel.

Damn, it felt good to get some real terrain...it's been too long, as testified by all the surfers who came out of the woodwork.

I had forgotten it was Bluesfest...amazing treat. Went back just in time to hear Holmes Brothers close out with Fly Away, Corey Harris, Cyril Neville's latest band, a set at Bev's Juke Joint, and finally Lamont at Grandma's.

Something about Mother, waves, and the harmony and rhythm of Blues that really works.

Today looks wet and like another late arrival of wind, so not sure if I'll stay.
Ride...just be it!

Thanks for the report, Randy. Doesn't really take much wind to create some great waves all around the Great Lakes. I bet the hardest thing is to rig a 7.5 when your mind says 5.0 looking at the waves. Looks like the forecast pretty much shut down for today up there, though now.

Might try to do Clear Lake today, since it is the only place "scheduled" to have wind today. Looks like the only launch migh be a public beach just off of Main St. Anyone ever been there? Possible to fly a kite out form that spot? Otherwise there are a lot of docks on that lake.
I suppose the windsurfer might be an option.

Yah, I was out there on friday, except i didnt see any other kiters except for mr. 14m windwing. It was difficult for me, just cause the of the waves, and im a beginner. I was using a 12m td and i just couldnt seem to keep it in the zone, it just kept sweeping back and forth and i just kept going up and down with waves smashing up against me. Like i said its probably just a beginner issue, but id like to know if its my kite?

"Don't EVER leave wind to find wind." I broke the rule! Saw Mike out on his WW, but thought I'd save my stoke for the "NUKING CONDITIONS" on Saturday. Woke up to find fog & no wind forecasted. But, on the way home all the Perkins flags were flying from N. Branch on south. Called d' crew & got in a solid 3 hrs. of riding @ Ramsey!
:D Thanks to Terry, Geo, Deb, Kurt, & Jeff for sharing the stoke! P.S: no "wind wisdom" here, Randy. Wish I had been patient & waited to ride with you in the evening. Sorry we didn't connect. Seems like we shared a session at the last Bluesfest. Maybe the next one.

And thanks to all for the rescue from the kite line eating weeds. I think I'd better check the length of my lines after the weed harvest.

After seeing the 10-day look So Good, it was "challenging" to see that Saturday was going to be a bust in pretty much the whole state.
Jimbo called about Noon and said "whitecaps on the Bear!" Really?!
Got there to enjoy 2 hours of pretty good wind. We all worked our way up to the flat water reef to play...with wind, it would be just like a mini Padre. Rock pile jumping anyone?
As things started to die off, all of use just barely made it back before it completely shut down.
Thanks for the call, Jim. A surprise, fun.

Yeah - it made my weekend! It was so nice to be warm and riding at the same time this year.

Terry - I never thought about checking my lines after weed harvesting. That's a good point. I bet there was a couple hundred pounds of weeds on your lines. How much load are those lines meant to take anyway?

Much more than that. I think you'll be OK Terry, but it's always a good idea to check your line length, especially after you just changed them out. Sometimes new line sets will stretch unevenly. Sounds like a great harvest however, wish I would have been there to see that.
