Utah in springtime

Post by rahlberg »

I was just out at skyline during the second half of March. For anyone who desires a change of pace from lake snowkiting, you need to go out there. Ultimately, the terrain makes flying kites in lighter winds a bit more challenging, but it adds a ton to the sport. Plus, even if there are no storms, you've got a huge base of snow most of the time because your at 10,000 feet. Also, the people were really cool. Brian and Heather from windzup/Ozone, and Chris N. Additionally, some of the liquid force team were out for a few days, as well as Rob from Ozone. For me, it was the perfect end to the snow season.

Some of this video shows parts of skyline: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMJ63Vd19J8

Cool video Looks like you were having a good time. And now that's how I remember the snowbanks when I was growing up. 8) Mark L

How long do they kite up there? I know that ski areas close earlier for insurance reasons, but there is generally plenty of snow, still.

I will be in SLC at the end of the month...

Brian S. from Windzup was telling me that they usually get a late April/early May storm. They ride into may but it can get pretty bare.

Skyline can be good in early May. Last year there was a ton of snow at Island Park ID, Yellowstone, and the Big Horns in early May. Now through mid May is a great time to kite out there - warm sunny days and nice corn snow conditions. Last year on the 2nd of May the fence posts were still covered. The high elevations can be good well into June at places like Beartooth Pass after it opens. I'm thinking about another trip out west to kite at the end of the month. Kite in the morning and trout fish in the warm valleys in the late afternoon. 8)
