Night Kiting Tonight Feb 28th?

Post by Aeolus »

Is anyone Kiting tonight? How about Kite Island or White Bear? The forecast looks good for tonight with just a little cloud cover.

I'm thinking about heading to kite island around 9pm and go all night. Fri I was at whitebear from about 3am till sunrise and it was great nice fresh snow and cruising in silence. One person actually startled me when he opened his fish house door and said Hi as I went by. :D :D Mark L

FYI -

Almost new moon. Kids were saying yesterday that "it was the COOLEST looking sliver moon."

what an incredible session. Found myself singing away. The powder is still so soft and quiet. Something about being out in the stillness of night. Even without the moon it was plenty bright enough. The stars were amazing. So much of the lake is still untracked...ok so I scribbled over a lot of it last night, but there is so much.

Randy, Keith and Cal motivated and made the session as well. Keith did great...trying a snowboard for the first time! We were sorta amazed there weren't others out.

My first night session of the year was goooooooooooood.
Under the cloak of darkness seemed to be a great time to strap a snowboard under Keiths feet for the first time.
It's great to see Keith's son Cal out hanging with us old guys.
Maybe some more night sessions this week???

PUT ME ON THE LIST. I've missed every nite ride so far. Isn't "Night Rider" back on the air? I feel like the last hold-out kiting on skis. Way to go, Keith! Ride-on, Nite Riders!! "The Hoff" would be proud. Remember, don't hassle the Hoff. I'll bring my "blinky-lite' next time.

So, as a virgin night rider, what are the recommended accessories for night riding? I recall seeing comments about putting lights on the steering lines or bridle, but don't know if that's the only standard addition? Do riders wear anything to make themselves more visible--blinker or headlamp or other? I'm sure some nights it's not much of an issue, but it was pretty dark last night on Minnetonka. Thanks!

DAVE Z. got lights for dog collars that blink. I used a LED headband. It doesn't provide much illumination, but they could see me when the sun dropped. Maybe if they were arranged in a UFO pattern a la "Close Encounters."

Last night was pretty dark but I could still see the other kiters pretty easily. I think it might be harder on Minnetonka because there are so many hills around the lake. A dark kite against the dark shore is tough to see.

I could see the bare ice spots where ice houses were well before it was too late. Let your eyes get adjusted and you should be fine. The blinky thinks look cool for sure.

I picked up a cheap pair of clear lens goggles. Really helps at night.
