Madtown Kite Gathering

Post by Karl B »

The Madison area riders would like to invite you to come hang out and
ride with the our crew Feb 21 or 22.
We will post the riding area and after riding hang out location a few
days in advance depending on conditions.
If the conditions aren't good in Madison and look good elsewhere, we might travel as a caravan to a place with suitable conditions.
Like normal days we plan on having terrain features on the lake which
vary by location and Bob will have plenty of kites from Eclipse, Slingshot, and Cabrinha to demo.

Plan on bringing your camera and video equipment so we can put together
something for everyone riding.

Tighe, please add this to the events page.

Cheers,

Karl

The current conditions in Madtown:
We had 2 inches of pretty heavy stuff the other day and today it got up to 40 today so it should be a nice smooth firm base layer. We are supposed to get around 3+ inches tonight/tomorrow and maybe a little more Friday night. If it doesn't drift too much it should be great conditions. I will post exact details on Thursday.

Cheers

Mt. Horeb is my hometown. I was in Madison 2 weekends ago on lake Monona, Saturday in 6 inches of standing water. Kitesurfing, it was. Gave a friend his first ride on a Frenzy 12. He was a natural and I could hardly get the kite away from him. His name is Christopher. He owns Naat Spil, Weary Traveler, and Magnus. He wants more before going to the Sawkirk range in Canada. Post if conditions are better!

From Karl...

Well guys the current conditions aren't looking too promising. We went from a forecast of 4-7 in to 2-5 to almost nothing and warm weather. The few inches of snow cover we had are pretty much melted. What a difference a day makes.

I talked with Bob and we are going to wait and see what happens with the snow we are getting now and see what they say for this clipper system coming in. We hope to make a call tomorrow on if its going to happen.

I did hear that they got significant snow north of us. We need to figure out a good contingency location. If it doesn't happen hear I would like to travel and take some rails and a jump with us. Who got snow and how much?

Cheers,

Rod

Latest update on the Madtown Kite Gathering.

We're on.

This Saturday at Tenney Park on Lake Mendota.

I just walked out on the ice at Tenney this morning and the ice surface looks a lot better than we thought as there is a nice crusty layer on top of the ice and any new snow will make it that much better.

As of right now, we could still use more snow, but the top layer looks really nice and grippy.

The winds models also look decent, so cross our fingers and hope for snow Friday night and winds on Saturday.

Woo hoo.

Tighe, TJ and anyone else,

It's fast. Great grippy snow, and it's fast right now. I just got off the lake and the coverage is good and the lake is smooth mostly and if we get 2 inches or more Friday night, it will be even that much better.

Inner city Madison lakes to NOT allow snowmobiles or cars and trucks, so the surface tends to keep quite smooth.

The event will be fun and yet laid back at the same time. We're running this as a fun get together, so we'll try different racing formats/ courses, etc and the freestyle will have to wait to see what Mother nature brings Friday evening and Saturday for more snow.

We will have a designated rigging area so keep to the right as you enter the lake from the parking lot. Parking at Tenney will get crowded fast and you might have to drop off gear and find parking a little ways away if needed.

If anyone has questions, don't hesitate to contact me or Karl.

Now I really wish I would have waited until this weekend to go to Madison but it wasnt in the cards. I was on Lake Mendota last Saturday (not kiting) and it was a little slippy but it sounds like conditions have improved.

I would consider going again but cant take that drive two weekends in a row. If you are driving watch out for the 5-0. They were EVERYWHERE last weekend.

Enjoy!

Hey Karl and Bob!

I had to make a last minute travel to the other side of the planet, so I won't be able to make it to the event. Sounds like it's setting up to be a really nice MadTown Gathering! You guys have some awesome conditions and we've all been hurting for some snow in the Twin cities. Have fun and post some pics!

update on freebies with the drawing.

Tyrol Basin Ski and Snowboard area in Mt Horeb has offered 2 free lift tickets to the lucky winner.

Eclipse is offering a kite golf bag. This is a very very nice golf bag.
Cabrinha and Slingshot have some hats, hoodies, shorts, shirts, solar showers, etc. etc.

let's all have fun and be safe.
