Patty's Surgery update

Post by JimPat »

Hey everyone,
The doctor said the surgery went well but Patty wasn't very well after surgery. The pain was so intense they gave her another pain injection. Shortly after that the pain was still very intense so they gave her a block from the waist down in that leg. This eliminated the pain but caused her to get quite sick. The surgery was at 2pm and this out patient facility/clinic tries to have everyone out by 5:30. Patty was in pretty rough shape when we left at 7:15. The reconstructive Patellar tendon surgery is way more invasive than an ACL surgery. They had to cut her open on both sides of the knee to run a wire up-down and around this tendon. Then the tendon and wire halo is pulled up and attached to the knee. They also did MCL and meniscus repair. I overheard the anesthesiologist telling his colleague how tough and invasive the surgery was. Patty is still in a lot of pain but they don't want her o-d-ing with what it would take to completely eliminate the pain. I am nursing and cooking 24/7 and I am enjoying being with her every minute! She is getting bored with lying around all day (tries to sleep and read a lot). I am thinking of buying the Wii for We. The rehab on this is six months. Then she can go in for ACL surgery and go through this all over again! She is thinking of taking up base jumping after this. The injuries usually don't require surgery! Thanks for everyone's prayer's and thoughts. Patty says HI!

I cringed through the explanation. I've heard we learn through pain - it sounds like you're learning a lot!

Hope the pain subsides soon.

Sorry about the knee Patty. Hopefully, they are giving you lots of good drugs. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm drugs. Jims account of your accident makes my torn meniscus feel much better. Hope to see you out and about soon.

I saw Jim at rink B today. So much for the 24/7 thing!

Come out to the island tomorrow Jim! Don't let your woman out injur you.

Patty -

I am super sorry to hear about your accident. I disclocated my kneecap, tore my ACL, MCL and partially the PCL about 10 years ago. They did a allograft for the ACL, but left my patellar tendon as-is. Within a year, I got back to skiing, volleyball (the intense kind). You will be able build up your strength again to kick Jim's @ss.

Good Luck!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about Patty's pain. My metabolism is better than most I can remove morpine from my system in 2-3 hours. This always meant at least an hour of pure hell before I got the next injection. They would only give me one every 4. I learned the importance of timing those injections just before physical therapy. I feel for her. Recovery is not fun. Hang in their Patty time fixes everything.

Sorry to hear about your injuries, Patty. Many of us have recovered from injurys & my most painful times were watching my friends having a blast. Stay healthy & strong. It's good for the body and soul.

Looking forward to seeing you & Jim hang with us at the beach this summer. :)

Take Care,

Jerry

O wow so sorry to hear, I just read about the injury. my thoughts and prayers are with you Patty and Jim for a good, full, unpainful recovery, I am still recovering from almost the same Injury had my surgery(hamstringgraph) on dec.4 so I know theres nothing speedy about recovering from this. now I am back to walking and feeling great after 3 months, TL is right time fixes everything hang in there. recovery from surgery was worse than the injury(I had to go in to the ER three times for ultra sounds to make sure I wasnt getting a blood clot running up my leg cause a clot/hemo thing build up was all up in my calf Very painful!) make sure to stay on top of the meds for sure!, I would forget to take em and the pain was unbareable to catch up on. I def understand they dont want her O-D ing , But make sure she is comfortable(get the right meds) and I understand its really hard to stay on top of this kind of pain its just some of these doctors need a good pimp slap.

Jim the Wii fit is the bomb for PT!!!(when she is ready or her PT gives the ok) I have been using one now for a week or so and the strength trianing for balance is awesome! great tool for PT on injurys like this !!

hang in there Patti  :) :D !!
