how bad is calhoun?

Post by wings »

I don't think I have the time to drive anywhere today but would really like to get out.
How bad is the snow?
Thanks

I'm wondering the same. I had foot surgery in November and this will be my first real session of the season (had one a couple of weeks ago that was a bust due to low wind). I need to get back into the groove but not invest too much drive time in case my foot can't handle too much.

Perhaps with the temps above freezing the snow on Cal will soften up to the point of being enjoyable. Anyone been out there recently?

The paper says there is a ice bike race on Calhoun at Noon today. I think I'll stay away. Has anyone been to Swede lately? Maybe I'll check that out instead.

I was out on calhoun last night - the base is good, about 2" of styrofoam snow. Should soften up today if it lasts at all. I always caution people about strong winds on calhoun - if it's blowing over 15 knots, it gets really gusty and can pose all kinds of challenges for those who like to jump (and newbies alike).

The snow conditions Saturday were pretty good. It got a little slushy later in the day. Today (Sunday) could be crusty.

It was gusty Saturday. Big lulls and then completely powered up. Gotta be on your toes.

bad bad wind... wind was from the west and my kite was doing funny things. Gusty, swirly... hard ice here and there, people, dog poop, bicycles, fishermen, kids, photographers, skiers, hippies, more dog poop in funny shapes etc... it was crowded... with the gusty wind, it was an accident waiting to happen. People were curious, they wanted to get closer... can't do much about it... so I left early.

I was really afraid of a situation where the wind dies... kite falls out of the sky, lines tangle around someone's throat and wham a gust hits... bye bye head.

Maybe it would just twist them and slice an ear off.
