Winter Kite Events

Post by Tighe »

Just got this schedule from Alex. Looks like there will be quite a few snow kiting events this year. I think we should hold some informal ones around Minnesota as well.

Preliminary Winter Schedule

Tahoe, CA          -         January 16 –18
Location, South lake near Kirkwood.

Sun Valley, ID       -         January 23-25
South Valley Kite Sports (Erica Niemi) who is  creating a snow kite park on 200 acres with facilities etc.  She is totally behind the tour and this stop.

Salt Lake City, UT      -         January 28-31
Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow, promoting the tour, the sport, and the gear. 3 days.

Jackson, WY     -         February 2-7
Semnoz Tour stop.

Missoula, MT  (Georgetown Lake)               -              February 13-15

Denver, CO          -         February 20-22
Dillon Lake

Bismarck, ND     -         February 27-29

Minneapolis, MN     -         March 5-7

Traverse City, MI      -         March 12-14

Alex and I are planning a Pro Clinic as well (he being the pro), most likely around the time of the event here in town. Basically it would be a chance to learn from Alex what techniques have helped him become one of the worlds best snow kiters. Contact me if interested.

Weather permitting this year could see significant growth in the sport. I already have had close to 100 people say they are interested in lessons. We'll be having numerous clinics throughout the year. Anyone interested in teaching contact me.

I'm very excited about this upcoming winter...let's hope it is very cold, snowy and windy! Count me in for the pro event Tighe...I'd love to learn more from you guys.

On the Lake Tahoe event - South Lake and Kirkwood are actually about an hour to an hour 1/2 apart...so if you are going to that one be sure to find out where the event is and get a close hotel - driving up there is slow going when it is snowing (often 3 or so times a week in the middle of winter) and they often close the highways in/around tahoe for a few hours during heavy snow storms, which is around the time you will want to be getting out.

Also, check out http://www.monkeysports.us for kiting information in Reno/Tahoe. They have a great community of kiters out there and Miguel Sloane is a nice guy that has identified some great spots for winter kiting. If you have questions he is great about replying to emails.

I appreciate the implication, though I don't in any way consider myself a pro. Alex is clearly a pro, and will be hitting most of the competitions this year. I will coordinate the event. He'll bring the voodoo wisdom.

Jackson hole and Georgetown Lake events

The Jackson Hole leg of the Semnoz event and the Montana Kite Rodeo are one week apart. I think the distance between the two events is about 7 hours...why not hit both?
