Support kiters sign online petition

Post by tom_latcham »

Greetings fellow kiters:
The ISAF has ruled kites are not sailing vessels and is stripping the records that kites are the fastest sailing vessels. Everyone should go to http://sbckiteboarding.com . See the news wire section on the right hand side of the page. Read the article in New York times and sign the online petiton. This rulling hurts our sport. Lets pass the info to get as many signers as possible.

Icarus, a catamaran, made runs with a kite as power in Weymouth speed week back in the 80's, I think there's a little bit of a precedent.

If a kite were a sailing vessel, wouldn't that imply that we would have to abide by any laws and/or regulations that apply to sailing vessels? Are there downsides to being considered a sailing vessel?

I don't pretend to understand the subtle nuances, but I signed their petition anyway. I thought it was ironic that the very body that disqualified the record, had been hired to witness and verify the self-same record.

Kites are not sailing vessels. They are water toys. Plain and simple. Quit trying to ruin it for us. We don't care about medals, we care about access.

Does that mean that a kite would be allowed in the Boundry Waters Canoe Area (BWCA)? No form of mechanized transportation is allowed, but what about kites? I have been wondering this for some time. Boy could you make some serious tracks up there in the winter if allowed!

MikeyG, hey man! yea you could put on some miles and its fun to snowkite/camp! Unfortuantly you can not have kites in the BWCA, tried a few winters back we def could of snuck in like others(heard the ozone crew did) but I respect what they got going and Ive been going there for 20 some years, so we just went to rainy and kite camped but theres so many places up north to have adventures at !!

JUst saw this on NW http://www.sailspeedrecords.com/content/view/102/3/
Im not really into racing so never read into this stuff to much, but others are so thought they might be intrested.
Dave wtf are u even talking about !?! whos the WE and the US you speak of ?
A kite is more than a water toy! plain and simple. and for someone who is talking about access you should know that ! respect thy kite .

Thanks for the reply Nathan. I took a few lessons from/with you last winter, almost spring. I remember having a conversation about such activity with you although I did not recall the answer. I figured that you couldnt do such a thing up in the BWCA, but how cool would that be. I agree with you about the poaching of the BWCA, I have been up there several times and although I know that it could easily be achieved, if it aint allowed then I will respect that.

I'm not doubting you but where can I find info on what is and isn't allowed in the bwca?

I would have assumed that a kite would be ok. I was wrong I guess.

Yo Mikey G , welcome to the forum , yea man u were ripping it up those lessons hope you get some riding in this season ! hey ILL be sending you a email soon.

Yes I agree it would be amazing to snowkite/camp/explore the BWCA with kites and I think that maybe just maybe they will allow snowkiting in the winter in time , theres a few things inprocess to MAYBE make that happen in the meantime we should respect their wishes

boardrider247 ,,
yea its tuff to find Info on this ,, basically had to just call and ask( they said no type of sailing equipment or sailing vesels are aloud even windsurfers thought I remeber someone posting pics of them windsurfing up there maybe that was on a small horsepowered lake and no one seemed to care I know that people have been sited for this type of this at least thats wat I was told by rangers) and when we got up there just went to the headqurters to ask anyway and they told us that is falls under the category of no sailing or sailing vessels .

Lake of the Woods is great for kiting... it would be much better the bwca. You have much more open lake and lots of little islands around! Instead of a bunch of small lakes and having to repack your kite between each one.

I'm planning on some winter camping up there in the next few months!
