Can you Windsurf on Lake Minnetonka or the St. Croix River

Post by Fred MPL »

My company has a boat tour set up for this afternoon on Minnetonka. Does anyone windsurf Minnetonka?

Clearly, it's a pretty heavily trafficked lake. Can anyone give me a list of pros or cons about windsurfing the lake?

Where is a good launch?

Should I just drive the extra 20 minutes to Waconia and windsurf there?

Lastly, I could ask these exact same questions about the St. Croix. I live in Stillwater, but have never tried windsurfing there.

Thanks in advance!

Fleet 8 used to have a minnetonka crossing race.
Numerous people windsurf on the lake, I think most of it depends on where you are related to the wind direction. Take your weed fin.

Fred, for future reference I would drive to Waconia. I live 5 minutes from Tonka, but I always choose Waconia which is a little over 15 minutes for me. If you know Tonka really well it might be worth it but for the unfamiliar Waconia is a lot easier and better wind. Tonka rules in the winter... that's the time to hang out there.

Arnie Cleveland is someone who knows about sailing the St Croix, looks like there's a race there this weekend in the Prescott area.

Gotta go I'm late for Waconia!

St Croix in Hudson is good for straight north or south winds. Yesterday there was 3 pole surfers there. they launched from the park next to the cities boat launch. During the week there isnt that many boats out especially when its windy out. Theres other places to launch around Hudson too.

There is a public beach in Lakeland just north of Afton that gets good on southerlies. It's been a long time since I've been down there though. Plenty of room to rig and launch. 15 min from Stillsville.

I've grown up on Mtka and windsurf all the time on the lake and love it. It's closer to the City then Waconia and there are very little weeds on the main lake vs. Weedconia

Here are some places you can access Mtka
1) Robinson Bay Beach

2) Cottagewood has 2 beaches on the south shore

3) Wayzata Beach but it's a little sheltered

4) Poachied Beach in Cottagewood. Take left before the general store on Western and go all the way down to the lake. It's an old fire alley and right on the main lake. Don't leave you beer bottles laying around,,,,,
