SPI over Laborday weekend?

Post by JAE »

Anyone have any luck getting wind in SPI over labor day weekend? Or is it just too much of a gamble that early in the fall. Wind looked good down there today.

Wow thats pretty cool. Looks like September is the least windy month. This week it looks great down there. Really drops off from August to Sept. Think I'll go somewhere else for labor day weekend.

The graphs show the number of days where wind is over X Bft. I assume Bft is a measure of wind speed. Anyone know how that converts to mph or knots?

Being a former MN who moved to down to SPI in November of last year to focus or kiting and to get away from the winter, winds definitely lighten up around Aug and Sept and return in Oct and Nov, so it if you can wait until Nov you should get some good wind. Also Dolly did some major damage to several hotels, Sheraton, Radison, Holiday Inn on the Beach and Bahia Mahr, all are closed and should reopen in Oct or Nov or that’s what they say. La Quinta (Tighe’s hotel of choice) lost a lot of roof tiles, but is open for business. Nothing like riding out your first hurricane on the island with steady winds 80-90 mph, gusting to 150mph  (coast guard reading on the island) for 2 straight hours. Then no power for five days, and it gets really hot here in the summer. The upside, we had some ok wind the weekend after the storm and everything was closed, so three days of 13-17mph, Friday through Sunday, can’t wait for 20+ to return to the island. I haven’t checked on Holly Beach road, but it had 3 feet of water on it after the storm, and several people said it’s impassable. Need any other info on SPI, drop me a note.

Hate to post a business repsonse, but we have a two bedroom condo we rent on the island and it's still available for November and December. If your interested, please contact me at tchase@rgv.rr.com and it is also posted in the classifieds.
