AP,

Thanks for the links, they helped my understanding of the forces at work.

Just out of curiousity, if you had ended up downwind of the peak of the ridge (beyond the lift bubble) would you then lose the ability to hold your position in the wind?

If you get too far back it gets ugly rather fast. While the lift drops off and becomes sink, the graphic is not very accurate. The wind actually shears off the top creating a turbulent "rotor" effect that can slam you to the ground. The wind then pushes back up the backside of the hill, hence the "rotor" term.

While another topic altogether, this shear is used by R/C sailplane pilots to dynamic soar (DS). These are the fastest R/C craft out there, designed to take 50+g forces and 300+ mph speeds (the record is 312 mph).

Some of you might be interested in seeing what is possible with a motorless craft. All this flying is done on the backside of a saddle.
