That's why they normally have gearing to keep them from speeding up. Normally no matter what the wind speed they hold the same speed.

wouldn't want to be near that thing when it went.

The RPM on a wind turbine is controlled by varying the pitch of the blades (angle of attack). This wind turbine must have lost blade pitch control. The centrifugal force was so great that it exceeded the stress the blades were designed for.
