anyone getting out today????

Post by Tighe »

Kare 11 just called and wanted to know. If you're heading out to brave the elements, let me know and I'll send them your way.

Is there any ridable surface out there?

Mike,

I was looking out at the lake, the wind, and how fricken hard that surface is, and I thought "hmmmm....bet Mike's gonna do a speed run today" Go get um. Might want to wear some extra padding, there are going to be some hard chunks out there today.

Will hit Spring after work. Might be time to try that ice blade I made. Been watching sailflow and Waconia has been cranking while Flying Cloud was way down but coming back up.

go by hutch and glencoe on northern winds... Cloud reads good with southern and east winds

venturing out to WBL around 2-230. I doubt my knee(s) will be able to hold out long on the hard surface.

The wind wasn't quite as much as I expected... about 15-20 with gusts around 25 or so.

I still got 46.9mph... My first speed run of the year!

I was on my 12 crossbow... would it help to go on a smaller kites? like a 10 TD?

The best I could muster was 55.2mph on a Waroo Pro 11. The conditions were quite hairy on WBL. Lots of glare ice, which made it a challenge to climb upwind after a run. The wind wasn't as strong as expected either. I was sweating after 2 runs though.

Bryce, I was able to get a 58mph run last year with a TD12, so I would think 60mph is quite possible with the CB12. You just need lots of wind. Bow kites are so nice because they depower like crazy so you can get upwind after a run.

WBL is unrideable on a snowboard, frozen ruts everywhere. Brutal! I left Mike W to ride solo- on skis. Mike, I hope it went okay for you as it is wicked out there!

looks like you did fine!

Yes, I managed ok, but it was a challenge. I just checked the readings and the wind was maxing out in the low 30's. Upper 30's for wind on a 12m should break 60mph. Lower 40's on a 7m should be even faster. We need that softer fast ice during the spring thaw.

I gotta agree with Kurt. My homemade switchblade worked rather well though; couldn't have done anything without it except go get the skiis. Was going to go out on the 9M Ranger but chickened out and went with my old 3 line 4.9M Quadrafoil. Had to keep it at the edge of the window and slightly upwind so I wouldn't get dragged downwind so fast. The downside is that it would luff and go down sometimes. There's a lot of frozen stuff for the lines to snag on now so it's a challenge. Intense, loud and the whole world was vibrating; the adrenaline rush we live for  At dark the wind picked up more and had to give up cause I couldn't get upwind anymore. Now it's really cranking. Too bad speed records can't easily be had at night.
