Yes bring your kites, you can rent a car and go anyware up and down the coast, i usually go to Mexico twice a year usually in the southern section furthur down twords Tulum, Mexico I have found out is very hit or miss, one day wind three days no wind, but the days it's windy you will be glad you brought your kite gear. A good Idea is to bring the biggest thing you have and a midsize that depowers well and you will more than likely be set, but most of all man just enjoy the weather and the fantastic people of Mexico it has so much to offer, get out and explore, I plan on retiring in Mexico in probably another 9 years.

Avery,

I lived in Playa del Camen for 1 year and my wife Shayne also lived there for 1 1/2, we meet there...... Beautiful town and very European. The place to kite is in ("Coco Beach" Punta Esmeralda) just 10 minutes from downtown. Be ready for morning sessions, I don't know why, but from 6am to 9am you have wind and then after 9am when it starts to warm up the wind dies and then you will have a little more wind in the afternoon from like 4pm to 7pm. I remember last new year, we went there for 17 days and I was kiting 15 of those days. Also we went there for a week in June (out of the wind season) and I was kiting 4 of the 7 days.

We will be in the area Dec 29! We can't wait.......

PS:You have my email if you are going to be around contact me and we can talk more.

I agree with champlin, windy maybe one day in 5. I was just there for first time and found that down near the Tulum ruins, about a mile south, you will find two Italian guys and also a Mexican dude named Juan who operate on the beach with rentals and instructions. My son and I rented an old C kite from Juan. Look for Best flags flapping in the wind.

This Mayan Riviera is not by any means a destination kite/windsurfing destination, but it would be worth it to bring your own larger kite/bar/hook and find an acceptable board to rent "IF" the wind does come up. If it comes it it will be steaaadddy but likely not very strong.

Otherwise the diving and snorkeling is great on those predictable calm days and there are other things to do.

Hey avery, Thats a greate plan for a '' kiteboarding Trip'', you will have to bring 2or 3 kites for the wind condition that is light wind, medium range winds and strong winds that will be blowing from the north becouse is the season. So don't forget your 9m or 10m kite. OK! avery on playa del carmen, Tulun, and Puerto morelos Beach areas, you will be riding winds from the North est, Est and South est. Locky you IF, North est gets thrue playa del carmen beach areas becouse South and North winds hit P . del carmen Off Shore wind. But hey don't be sad yet, if the wind is from the north, go to Cozumel island for kite surfing or flat water the crosing it's
12$us per person by boat it takes only 25 minuts to get on the Island, and then the last is to take a taxi for to get on a location call'' Playa barracuda'' nice location with a bar, food and swiming area for your wife and friends you guys will Love it.......

Well I agree with Alfredo and he is from Cozumel....

It is the not a first time that I heard people a little disapointed with the winds in la Riviera Maya. Just I have to say in my experience, if you plan a trip to Mexico for kiting try to plan the trip BETWEEN Dec21 and the end of March (wind season). I have been going to Mexico during this time the past several years and there has always has been enough wind to make it worth it to bring your kiting equipment.

Again Riviera Maya is kiteable during the windy season.

Avery,

You mean to say your last trip to Padre was not good enough weather for you? (It was cold and rain every day over Turkey for those that were there)

Let us know how it goes!

When are you going there? My family and I have gone to Akumal (20 min. north of Tulum) the last 3 yrs at the end of January. I wasn't kiting but I'd say that 2/3 of the days were kiteable and last year I tried a day in Tulum - nice spot. This year we are going Jan 17-28 and I plan to bring my 14 and 9m with. Mostly 10-20 or 15-20 mph days with some stronger ones. I think it is a great destination for a mixed family + kiting because you win either way. The snorkeling and beaches are beautiful and it's always been 80s and nice down there. Also it's tough to beat a 4 hr direct flight to warm weather (I'm not sure what other location meets that criteria in Jan-Feb, no where in US).

If anyone else will be down their then let me know.

Caroline and I are going to Mexico again Feb 23rd through March 1st along the stretch from Cancun to Tulum, don't know which resort we will hit this time, I have a memebership with the Palace Resorts all inclusives can't beat it it's the way to go, they have both Family and adults only no kids resorts, excellent service extremely clean and great beaches. So Lauren if looking for a nice resort for the family to hit check ouut the Cancun Palace or the Beach Palace you wouldn't be disappointed!

If anyone else is going down in this time period let me know because I will be renting a car and pick you up to kite possibly?

If you haven't already, check out, ikaruskiteboarding.com. Isla Blanca has knee deep flat water for as far as you can see. Sounds like an island but is a peninsula. Across the peninsula you get the surf. 20 min north of Cancun. Great for the prevailing NE. Staff speaks great English. You can kite out of a private beach for 50 pesos a day.

We just came back from an 11 day vacation in Mexico ! We had a very good time. We met a lot of kiters from around the world, Jeff and Patty from Air Padre Kiteboarding, Brian from Cross Lake, MN and others from Boston, France, Italy, Canada and Mexico. We had a great time kiting in Puerto Morelos and some fun dinners too! I had the pleasure to kite 9 of 11 days! 5 days I used my HP10 and the other 4 my HP14.....

I hope we can go back the middle of Feb!!

Here are some pictures http://www.lakawa.com/lakawaphoto/?show=185

Your pictures have me pumped, we leave on Thursday for the warm air of Mexico. Do you get much swell at Pto Morelos?
Where exactly do you park when you go there?
Give me a call if you get a chance to fill in more details, otherwise I'm planning on hitting Tulum since I'll be just 20 min. from there in Akumal and I know there are folks kiting in Tulum with the extreme control folks.

Sweet Pictures once again Maximiliano!! What days are everyone going to be in Mexico? Isla Blanca we will be like 15 minutes from there I can't wait!!! It would be so cool to get a big group to go down to Mexico every year kind of like they do in South Padre, except there is a lot more to do down in Mexico, South Padre is pretty bland, great kiting but kind of boring on the down time. Anyway I hope everyone has a great time and be safe!!
