good spot to ride

Post by Stroh »

tanager lake has been frozen for the last two weeks ( I havn't checked it)
but I am sure it's safe. Nice snow cover and should be good on an east wind.

Just thought I would throw it out there. decent option for the west side crew

Big Lake

Post by champlin »

Has anyone tried Big Lake up HWY 10 just past Elk River, I tried last year but the wind was to light, I'll get out there this year though, the lake doesn't have to much obstruction especially if the wind is blowing south.

I have icesurfed and snowkited on Big Lake. It's pretty small, with fish houses and snowmobile traffic.

Scored a sesh on the lake(swamp) thats just to the west of the mall in Eden Prairie.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?fo ... &geodiff=1

(click on the aerial image, it doesnt show up on the regular map)

8-10 inches of powder. Didnt see any open spots. The wind can get a little flukey but it stays well lit from the city lights all night long. Another option for Westsiders.

west side riders - Pelican lake ?

Post by RobH »

Wondering if anyone has ventured out on Pelican lake just north of Buffalo. Its more of a overgrown swamp with very shallow depths covering miles of terrain just north of Buffalo.
Closest Town: Monticello

Lake Size: 5,133 Acres

Public Boat Access: Located on Southwest channel of lake off Co. Rd. 15

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently teamed up with the Wright County Board of Commissioners, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, and the DNR to purchase 290 acres on the shore of Pelican Lake near St. Michael in Wright County.
In addition to a mile and a half of shoreline, the parcel has a small oak-basswood forest, two drained wetlands, and about 150 acres of cropland that will be converted to grassland.

Rob,
I've seen Pelican on the map, it's one of the closest lakes to me. I have not checked it out yet. If you are looking for someone to check it out with you, give me a call. 763 441 1521
I'd like to check Diamond Lake in the Dayton/Rogers area out as well.

Stroh, Spring will be a crap shoot for awhile. It had 4 inches near the shores that froze(shallow end by boat launch) but was open in the deeper part right up to the night b4 the 2nd big snowstorm. I haven't seen any ice fisherman out there and I'm even leary about trying to X-country the perimeter. Spring is just OK for most winds except south with a bit of east and higher winds tend to add more swirl than is already there. Very convenient for me.

Does anyone have any idea how fast ice forms with 8+ inches of snow on it?

It was -7 last night and 12 in the morning.
ENJOY :) ........... Bill

ice wont thicken with 8inches of snow on it.

two years ago we had 1.5inches of ice with 1-2 inches of snow. eaven with temps below zero the ice wouldn't get any thicker

:x :x

Is this the place right out by the new Culvers they have been building? Tomorrow is supposed to be some good wind according to Iwindsurf, 15mph. Send me an email to if you want at scott.ridout@fargo.com if you want to get out? I just might try it right after work tomorrow?

Just to pipe in on the ice making with snow on it, last night at my house the internet said it was -4° I went and check my wireless weather station in the garage and that said it was 20°. I had shoveled my unit into a snowbank when I shoveled my driveway, so that tells me the temp of the snow is right around 20º, which should form some ice but its not going to form as fast as it would without the snowcover.

I live on lake minnetonka on west arm. so I haven't had the need to go check out prior lake this year.

my lake (west arm) is frozen solid and safe every where now. the problem is there is no public acces to the lake and no extra parking at my place and the street is a tow away zone, however there is some parking down the street at the park. the winds that work are West through North, WNW is the best.

the snow is great about 4-8 inches untouched pow

I will be going out tomorow. if any one wants to come out, shoot me an email or call me 9528073306 for directions, it's just down the street from Lord flechers.

prior lake only works on WSW and ENE but it will still be gusty because it is in a revine with big hills on both sides.

you could check out

fishermen will hit this lake as soon as it's safe. so if they are out there it's good.
