Last year I took everyone's advise and started kiting with ski's before trying a snowboard for the first time. Now It's time to try a snowboard. My question is how much does the length of the board really matter? I'm 6'2" about 175. I see deals for boards that are in the mid 150's in size. I have been told that I want something at least 160. Having never been on a board I have no idea what size would work best for me. All I'm looking for a something to play with in deep snow. Do I drop big money for the right set-up or do I find a good deal on something that would work to see if I even like being on a board vs. ski's
I searched the whole forum section for answers and asked plenty of snowboarders, but they all downhill. All I will do is kite with mine.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
I am a skier ( guess I snowboard sometimes too).. but... I have a good pair of skis and some beater skis (actually several.. garage sales this summer). I will take the beater skis out in semi-snowy fields... ride next to gravel roads (lots of gravel in the snow) and other crappy conditions.
If i had to make I choice, I would get the beater snowboard first and ride it hard. Then get a decent one if you decide you need the performance... and you'll always have that beater board for the marginal days.
I have a delaminating snow board you can have. its about a 168 I think a supermodel, nice and soft. no bindings. It should work great to see if it works for you. Other wise I have some used stiffer boards for sale.
Vis, may I suggest that after you take Gary up on that 168 Supermodel you learn how to ride the board at a local ski hill. Time on the slopes is really going to pay off huge when it comes time to kite.
I would definately go for the cheaper board, especially if it is your first board. This way you can beat on it and ride it hard without having to think how much you spent on it.
I have been snowboarding for 15 seasons now, I am 6'2" and I currently ride a 162 wide board. I have had many boards in the mid 150's and they worked just fine on the slopes. However, I am not sure if size matters when trying to kite upwind?
Thanks for all the info. This is exactly what I was looking for.
Rookie, if the offer still stands I will take you up on your offer for the free board. I would also be interested in hearing about your other boards for sale. My number is 952-707-1101 or if you want to leave your's I would be happy to call you.
Davec, I don't have small feet and there has to be a joke somewhere else in that staement of yours. Thanks for the advise
Vis. if you want something beyond Rookies board drop me an e mail. sblain@frontiernet.net .
I'm one of many, Rookie, Pete K, Rob H , Nancy B certified snowboard instructors on the site. When they've made some snow, let me know and I'll be happy to help you get this here boarding thing down
Sweet! Steve, I'll have to get in touch with you or Nancy when the snow flies. I would like to get my little one a lesson or 2. She won't listen to me or the kiddies out at afton. She's been boarding for a couple years and could use a brush up.
katie , sounds wonderful, just drop me an e mail when you want to get out.
Once it's consistantly 28 degrees at night with low humidity they can start making the snow so it won't be long.
