I'm going to try and make it up to Park Point late Thursday morning. I'll also have my 540mm lens to document the craziness. Is Tot Lot going to be the spot? The good news is, the MDH sampled yesterday and the e. coli. problem has gone away.

Just a note from something that Chip taught me; When it gets big like this, there are wide smooth lanes for sailing on the inside. When I first sailed superior I was afraid, very afraid, but the bigger it gets the easier it is to sail inside and still get monster airs...

Actually, I was out when that storm started, but not the day these pictures were taken.
You can sail Park Point in anything the lake will throw at you as long as the water is tolerable. When it gets that big, you can forget going outside the shore break. For that matter, you can forget going into the break zone. Just sail the speedways between the mush waves right near the beach. – you can even sail up onto and off the beach with the waves.. Its pretty cool… Be very, very careful of the rips of course–the depth in them will be unexpectedly deep at almost any distance from the beach in those conditions.
Biggest hazard might be that the waves start dragging driftwood (as in 30 foot long logs) off the beach and laying it out perpendicular to the beach for you entertainment..
Kiting might not be such a hot idea – I’m not a kiter though so I don’t know for sure.. Sailing is possible because the wind really starts to lift do to the big waves so you’re in big waves but not HUGE wind. Never been out on less than a 4.0 and I’ve sailed with it gusting to 70 at 30 feet off the water.

Last night I heard some of the older guys talk about the "Feelin' a big Nor'Easter" in their bones. After work I had a scotch and listened to the wind pound the house. A few of the gusts made the entire house crack and pop. Feeling it coming, there was just a little something in the pit of my stomach, knowing I was going out. I would call it fear, except for the fact that the replies of "Girly-Man" in the postings is something I fear more than Gittchee Gummee herself

Coming back from Duluth, I was listening on the news and they were talking about the GALE FORCE WINDS on Superior, Edmund Fitzgerald, etc. The only Problem is they DIDN'T Happen today. Dropped off from about 4.0 at just before Noon to about 10mph in about an hour. Needless to say, no sailing was achieved. Rigged 4.0 thinking it would build, then ended up going out on a 6.6 (that was hard), only to get no rides on that. When we left at about 3:30 or 4:00 it was 60º and SUNNY! Wierd.
Gonna hafta live off the memories of the good days, I guess, and look forward to the next High Wind Event.

If it's any comfort, she's danced naked before me, got me all aroused and ready, only to let me know my timing just wasn't quite right. Oh well, it's given me deeper gratitude for the intimate moments we have had together. Also, you've got some epic terrain shots from Dave. I can't imagine handling a 6.6M in those water moguls.
Credit to all of you with the courage to meet Mother with a forecast like that.

No Randy, I haven't really been caught mainly because I'm extra careful to avoid falling in the rips in those conditions. If I do fall in the rip, I get my sail lofted right away so I don't get dragged out to sea. I know plenty who have been caught up and a few who won't go back in the lake because of it..
Yesterday, I sailed about 1/2 mile in dieing conditions before getting launched through my sail.. Then I got gaffed by my fin trying to get my sail out of a rip- I was standing with my feet firmly planted on the bottom, sail in the water, determined to run me over... Definitely a no-win situation.
I talked to somebody yesterday that mentioned they fell and were instantly dragged out into the break zone. Times like that you have to decide if you are going to leave you rig and swim for the beach. That may sound counter-intuitive but if you're in neoprene and can't get out of the wash cycle because the rip has you trapped there - its your best option - swim 100 feet up or down the beach and body surf in. Then you can probably sit on the dune and wait for your rig (or what's left of it) to come full circle back to the beach...

2) Those rips make the water seem like those 1970s movies of pirhanas gone bad. Even at the shore it is pretty sketchy I was in about 6" of water, just coming out of the lake, and the sail got sucked down, felt like it was made of lead. I just laughed cause it was so pathetic. ( I think it was just burying itself in the sand so it didn't have to get out and go home.)
