To avoid insanity look for a new game which is not weather dependant. It has been so bad I now look at windsurfing as a treat, an unexpected kiss of wind.
As some of you know Nancy and I have got into cycling the last couple of years. Let me state it is no replacement for windsurfing, it has a different high, a pleasure derived from feeling your body work well and increase it's capability with more time in the saddle. There is adrenaline to be found sweeping into a corner at 40 mph. with a group of racers, it's exciting but does not touch the soul like a good day on the board.
However it has stopped me killing anyone due to pure frustration.
So look to new games, enjoy. When the wind blows be ready, rush,you may miss it.

THAT'S IT!!!
I am going on a wind strike TODAY at Bellaire! If it's really going to blow 10knts NW today I am goin to rig my 9.0 and SIT and watch people throw frisbees until it does!!! You think I'm kidding but I'll be there!!! ...even if it takes until SUNDAY!!!

According to Mapquest, it's 412.64 miles from the Cities with an estimated drive time of 9:41 (of course for the wind crazed, that'll be more like 6 hours tops).
Actually Experimental is showing pretty good wind anywhere on Lake Michigan today and tomorrow.

If missery loves company, the crew that was out on the Canary Islands trying to break the work speed record didn't really get the wind they were expecting either http://www.worldspeedsailing.com/. Forcasted gales kept withering there too. Of course it was better than here. They had days with with gusts a little over 30 knots. The top board speed clocked was 46,30 knots (I think that's just over 53 mph) but still under the current record of 46.52 knots set by trimaran Yellow Pages in 1993.
Even though they failed to set a new record, the really cool thing is that these speeds were on windsurfing equipment that is not all that different from the stuff we rig... the sails are "normal" two sided Mylar, and the boards (tiny) are made of the stuff we are sailing on.
Planing starts in the lower teens and, for me, breaking into the lower 30s is really a rush. Can you imagine being on a board at speeds around 50 mph?

Just to make you guys feel better, the winds have totally shut down here also. I’ve only rode twice in the last two weeks. We test drove a boat last night. It was a blast. For you wakeboard style kiteboarders, the test drive/rides are a great way to get some free pseudo-board time in even if you don’t own a boat. Just a suggestion I thought I’d pass along as way to get on the warm glassy water on a beautiful summer evening.

Yep - this has turned into a pretty long thread.
I'lm obviously the first one to complain about the wind this year, but it's clearly just not a normal summer.
There have been a couple times I seriously considered selling my gear. All that stuff adds up to a lot of money, and it feels pretty bad when it doesn't get used. I've only kited less than a dozen times this year, not counting a trip to Hatteras (where I got more sessions in one week than this whole MN season).
There are two things to remember, though - 1) Keep the faith, 2) It can't get any worse than this... Really!
