'07 SS Link: Good first kite?

Post by KSweeney »

Hey guys,

I think I'm able to get what I think is a good deal on a used 12m Link rig. $350-450 (friend of a friend situation). This would be my first kite, the kite I'll be learning on. I've heard A LOT of bad stuff about this kite. Should I pick it up or wait until I can find a good deal on a TD1 or X-bow? Because of my financial situation (not enough $$ for water board/lessons), I probably won't be starting until winter, so I'll have plenty of time to scour the classifieds.

Also: the kite has the red bridle (I have no idea what that means  ), and I weigh 160lbs.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The Link is very responsive, which makes it a great kite for advanced riders, but not so good for beginners. The red briddle allows for easy relaunch, but has pulleys and changes the way the kite flies just a tad.

If you know what you're doing, the Link at the price you mentionned is a killer deal. Otherwise, I'd watch the classified or visit the local shops for a kite that's a little more beginner friendly.

I would agree with Denis on wait for a more begginer friendly kite.

Denis are you using the red bridles or still 5 line right now? I am still flying my links 5 line.
