I have flown the 16 TD1 for almost year and tried out the 14 TD2 in really light winds on the snow. Still with hardly any time at all on the 14TD2 I would say it seemed to have the low end of the 16TD1. On the snow either one of these kites will get you going in the slightest breeze (say 6 mph or so) and you can generally keep them in the air pretty easy and even get some jumps if you can find some puffs over 10mph.
On the water in a steadier light wind (say 8-12mph) the 16TD1 is really nice, just sit back and let the kite do the work. If it's gusty light wind (5-15mph or 3-17mph!) I prefer the 12TD1 because the kite reacts faster so you can compensate for the fluky conditions which is more important when you are trying to stay on a plane and get upwind.
Anyway, from what Tighe has said about the 14TD2 on the water it seems like a fine replacement for the 16TD1. The next TD2 size up is 17 I think and seems like it would only be necessary for a heavier rider over 200 pounds. The 14 seems to have plenny o grunt!
We were out on the Wack in 10-12mph one evening about a month ago me on the 16TD1 and Tighe on 14TD2 and he was racing all over the lake like he owned it!
