Helmet cam

Post by Randy »

It's so great to have all the new technology coming out to help savor our ride moments. I'll definitely want to check out the high quality vid Tighe and John reference. I picked up a pretty inexpensive helmet cam from Best Buy (Oregon Scientific) for $69 and put in a 1 gig card for some home enjoyment. I almost taped it to my kite for another angle, but still hesitant to damage it. I'm now looking for a water housing to capture some Superior sailing. This unit is about the size of an erected penis and has no wires. (yes, I threw this in for a Steve Blaine humor reply).

Thanks for the chuckle, Randy! Enjoyed the vids; What a crazy dog! I'll try to hold my negativity in check if it means you'll post more often. I also was amused by Tighe's description of the camera lense being the size of a 1/2 cucumber! I think Mr Frued would have alot to say about that! Jim N. BTW: Stopped by "The House" to try on Dry-Suits, & ran into Kathy B. How lucky are we to have so many great people in the LAKAWA realm?

Christian bought one, he put it in the kite but got 50 minutes of blurred snow. It's hard to set the camera so it shoots what you want to see.
Come on Randy you're even older than me......how do you remember how big an erect penis is :?

I too have been playing with helmet cams. Got some video from the Crossing and another from a day out at Waconia. cool way to catch it all. Nice job Randy.

I'm sure Frued would have a field day with me Jim. I was raised by 2 shrinks who undoubtedly experimented with various child rearing practices...some more successful than others. I'm professional wacked. and lovin it... ; )

one unit

The entire unit is about six inches long and a little over 1" in diameter. Half of this tube space is for 4 aaa batteries. It only comes with 256k card and I got a 1 gig card for another $20. It also has a velcro adhesive pad for the helmet and a holder for the tube.

I went with the lipstick camera that plugs into a standard mini DV camera. The resolution was much better but you do have the hassle of wearing a back pack with the camera.

The quality is pretty good actually. The only thing I think I would prefer is less of a wide angle lens. They have zoom lens, which I intend to get.

This is the one I got.

Well thanks to you I just bought a helmet cam :D

I did some searching and found they had a newer version of that camera (ATC2000) that had 30 frames per second and can hold up to 2 gig card, waterproof to 10 feet, and was only $110 shipped on ebay

So I got one from this seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... &rd=1&rd=1 Who has gotten good feedback from people who bought this same camera, so he looks legit.

edit:

if you get this you can aslo get a 2GB SD 60X ULTRA card for $4.99 shipped from frys

great deals all around.

I have the ATC 2000. And I have it mounted to my kite. If you are interested in the mounting or some sample footage I will post here later. The camera is waterproof despite packaging and owners manual that says it's not. A 2 gig card gets you 1 hour of footage on the highest settings.

I'd love to see raw footage that isnt youtube bastardized.

I read some amazon reviews and they are slamming it. Do you guys ever run into issues where severe shocks cause the memory to corrupt, and you cant record anything after till you format the card?

I guess I shouldn't expect too much with this according to some of the reviews people have posted :X

Nice footage, Jason! Glad to see you're riding already. We just got another blast of snow & won't get back to 50 'til next week. Don't you miss MN weather already? Don't answer that! E-mail sometime and let us know your new situation, etc. Jim N.

Jim, I live and work in Wilmington, NC. Wilmington is an smaller city under 100k people average age 32. My house is 10 minutes from Wrightsville Beach. I'm at the beach at least three days a week surfing, kiting or checking out the eye candy. Everyday between 12 and 1 the wind shifts SSE and steady 12-20 mph. There are 20 +/- kiters in the area and probable more that kite near by islands. I would have to say as far as practical places to live near the ocean go, this might be at the top of the list.

Thanks for the reply, Jason. My cousin used to live in Wrightsville! He worked for G.E. then, but was more into fishing. I don't think they even had windsurfing back then, much less kiting. Keep in touch, It would be fun to come out & ride with you and and maybe even Darlene again some day. I finally got my 1st Milly session at Malmo last week, and got blown off WBL at Bellaire windsurfing last Sat.
