Milly Clean up

Post by Rick R »

Hey everyone
I am looking for some feedback and help. I talked with a rep of the soil and water district in the Mille Lacs area. With 1st ice out they would like to do a shore clean up. I was hoping some kiters/windsurfers would be interested in helping out. My thought is clean up Reddy and or Malmo. get some credit from the locals, improve our own habitat, take a little ownership of the area.
It would be important to know who is interested so I can work out the details of getting the garbage picked up by the county. Also if I let them know we might be able to get a small thank you package, maybe a lunch depending on the day. The big thing is it might get a little positive press, it could be the start of carving out a little niche for us.
On top of the positive spin, 1st ice out. do a little clean- up and hopefully get some rides in.
let me know what you think and if you think you are interested. obviously weather dependent but thinking the 21st 22cnd of April? I am leaving my email and you can shoot me a note and then I can start a list going RstevenR@aol.com
thoughts? questions?

I would be interested in helping to clean up, but maybe a later date? A lot of people who use that area will be south (SPI) this month. Just a idea.

Rick
thanks for taking the initiative to organize this. That lake gives us so much, giving a little back only seems natural.

I'm game.

As Dianne pointed out, many of us will be down in Padre in April. A large group returns the 23rd.

Let me know if I can do anything else to get the word out.

I'm in - I could most likely work it out to do either one or the other of those dates, or possibly a later one if needed.

Additionally, I'll provide photos of the event at no cost to the local media if they would be willing to spend some ink on it. I know a few folks at the Brainerd paper, and I bet the Mille Lacs Messenger would be interested. I know the Dispatch newsroom is often being encouraged to cover more "Garrison" stories...

I'll look forward to any additional info.

Thanks,

sweet....
I was thinking after I posted that I should try and clarify. the dates I posted are for sure an appx, the person I talked with mentioned that to be an appx range. in the end the lake will deciede when the ice out is. sooner? later? my understanding from my conversations is that the closer to the actual ice out that we as a collective group get there the better, the idea is to get the debris before it goes back out again, sinks or whatever. also my understanding is that it would be best for the SWCD if we were close to the time that they were trying to get others out on other areas for the removal of trash piles from around the lake. so if you have some flexibility that helps. if you can forecast the weather that helps even more. from my conversations I am also under the impression that the local media would be notified of our efforts (to what extent I can't say at this time)
I will keep in contact with the soil & water folk and post additional updates. if people can post if the can participate or email me then I let them know of our intrest, and I will keep an eye on the weather

Hey Rick, GREAT idea. That lake is nasty at the breakup. All the trash the ice fisherman leave out there has to go someplace. I'll keep an eye on the lake and try to give everyone a heads up to when this might happen. We just got a dumping of snow and it all freezed up solid again. Reddy will probably be extra xpecially dirty, because it's usually a south wind that finally breaks if up.

Thanks for doing this, and if you need any help orgainzing give me a call

Want to help out. I'll be in Utah/Colorado that weekend of April 21st. If the ice break up is later, I'll be there.

hard to say when the ice is going to go? looks like it is going to stay cold for a while. I just read a ice fishing report that put the ice at 2 feet plus in spots, we need a warm sap

THe lake seams to be about to break up. I'd say either today or tomorrow. I almost went out last night after work but the wind was off and on, not worth getting cold over. It would have been perfect smooth water at garrison, riding between two big ice sheets. I'd guess that if we wnat to clean up the beach after breakup, this weekend is the time.

hey just checked my email, the soil and water cordinator emailed me and in her email she said that she thought that this weekend was to early because of all the ice on the main part of the lake. is that what you are seeing?
