Anyone know how much ice is out there? Did it seem pretty solid to you guys?

Thanks,

Hey Mike,

I have a training thing going on tomorrow until 3, but then I was going to head out kiting. I was thinking Nokomis if it's safe. Not sure about Nate or Ben -- I was going to call them tomorrow.

Let me know what you work out. I'd like to meet up with you guys.

I am thinking about heading to Nokomis this afternoon. Was the ice thick and safe enough? Looks like good wind today.

scored a nice sesh out on Nokomis today. God damn but that is one gusty lake. I had my foil out, I know, I'm starting to love/hate foils in a way I never thought possible. The thing just folds in half even when the wind is cranking.

Well, despite all that Nokomis has a milky look to the ice, 7-8 inches thick reported by the ice fishermen, smoothe enough for government work. My friend Charlie who has been flirting with kites for a couple years scored himself a nice couple of runs while I used his tarp-and-dowel sail, a pleasure which was a gateway activity a couple years ago that led to kiting.

We all had our fun and while I missed the chance to hang at Cedar I hope everybody there enjoyed the 15-20 gift. Bottom line: Nokomis has kick ass ice.

Dave, that was you out there flipping around? I had just packed up my kite (also a foil) and was heading home frustrated. I had the same problem with my foil folding up and getting tangled on itself. Any one have any suggestions on how to prevent that?

Nice to finally have a local lake to hit during the week!

Leah--

Well, one of them was me. I had a red foil north side beach area by the hockey rinks. I saw a purple foil, a small c-kite, a few other random kiters. I was there from 2:30-5:30. Maybe it was me you saw?? I can tell you that I've gotten to like my Sabre a little more every time I go out, but it doesn't touch the Waroo. But I'm not going to wreck my 'roo on the ice.

Try and post before you go out next time and I'll try to head in your direction. Then we can curse at our foils in unison.

David...I don't know what foil you're using but it really shouldn't do that. When a foil does it often means the brake lines are too tight. If it's not that I'd drop an e mail to the manufacturer and ask some questions. Often they can tell you the fix.
Foils don't love gusty wind but if setup well they can handle it.

Steve, yesterday it was really gusty and variable on Nokomis. From a distance the kite looked like a duck being shot out of the sky. One second shaped and powered the next crumpled and dropping out of the sky. This also happend alot with foils last year on Calhoun when flying in the wind shadows on the north end. Glad to hear you were only bruised. Any chance you will post pics of your bruise(s). :P

I used to live by and windsurf Noko back in the day, SW is prolly the cleanest direction, others are gonna get dirty.

It was gusty on the Wack also, even the TD12 (aka the Binford Gustmaster 6000) was doing the herky jerky at times.

Might want to find a cleaner fetch to judge whether it's the kite or just dirty wind. There were several foils out on the Wack that seemed to being doing just fine.

Steve, I understand, but with your creative skills I thought we might be seeing a new family portrait, Nancy, you, and unidentified pet Bruiser. It's all about packaging isn't it?
