Ice boat hits open water today on WBL

Post by jradtke4 »

There is an 3' wide stream from the point of the Dellwood penninsula that runs across the channel to the south side of Manotou Island. The guy hit the open water and wrecked his boat, he had to climb the mast and crawl on the sail to safety. I was behind him heading from Mahtomedi trying to get to Ramsey but change my plans after seeing the wreck. The pilot of the ice boat was O.K.

Interesting...there was a post on iceboating.net mentioning that little landmine. How's the rest of the lake?

Here's the post from iceboating.net. Hoping for a good holiday weekend since I missed out today:

Wow - another awesome weekend at White Bear. Despite the fact that we had less than 40 hours of temps at or below freezing in the last week, we lost very little ice thickness. The ice is still 4 - 6 inches in most places. The surface is near perfect although slightly mottled.

Not a lot of wind Saturday, but the breeze was 8 - 14 mph today, averaging around 10 most the time. Not too much ice boat traffic as I think people were nervous about the warm weather.

CAUTION: between the Peninnsula and the Island there is a long stretch of wide open water along the pressure ridge mentioned last week. One Nite sailor lost it into the hole and destroyed his boat but thankfully scrambled to safety (broken mast went through the deck!). Many boats stopped to help in the rescue effort - never sail alone!

I've seen that slot between the peninsula and island in years past. Interesting - must be a regular occurrence.

Spent about 3 hours just off of Ramsey. You had to go out about 100 yards to get away from sand blown ice. I checked the ice a few times and found it to be a solid 4".
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up,totally worn out and loudly proclaiming. WOW! What a ride!!

Had fun ice boarding with Pete & Nick. Was cruizin on a 5.5m sail. Pete tried his new Ozone, while Nick test drove "Big-Pink." Glad I resisted the urge to insert myself in the GAP & that ice boater made it out okay! Wonder if a kiter would have had enough reaction time to boost over the the opening? Hope we never have to find out. Looks like some nights in the teens & 20's...that should firm things up. JN
