too much wind
lately we've had more days which were too windy than days that were not windy enough. anyone ever had any luck kiting in 40 plus kts??? spirit lake always has an open invitation to anyone looking to find some more windy days. make sure to drop johny a line while he's healing after the slight ankle injury, anyone who's been there knows how long 6-8 weeks can be.... anyway, mothers day 30-40kts and four foot swell on spirit, wish i kad a smaller kite!!!!!
You're risking your life and of reputation if you say "too much wind" on this board. (tounge in check)
The first year I was learning to sail, I got to the lake and it was blowing good. I didn't have the skills, equipment or mental ability to deal with it. As I was walking around the shore pouting, I kind of blurted out,
"There's too much wind!"
The boardheads gasped and became silent. The howling wind even backed off enough for me to hear Kirk, looking me straight in the eye, say in a clear drawn-out tone:
"There is NEVER too much wind"
We laughed and the wind returned to it's former frenzy. Windsurfing Lesson #47; There is never too much wind. OK, I got it.
But seriously jesse, I know what you mean. A lot of windsurfers complain "There's not ENOUGH wind!" Maybe the kiters should look em' in the eye and say in clear drawn-out tones... With a smile of course! It's frustrating when you can't get out and enjoy being on the water.
I don't know about kiting in high winds on the water. It seems that the stronger the wind is, the bigger difference between the lulls and gusts. Tough on a kite. With the right conditions, equipment and skill I'm sure it can be done.
You might enjoy windsurfing in those condition. But for all I know you might already be an expert windsurfer and have already discarded your high wind equipment. If not, I think you would really enjoy surfing on those 4 footers on Spirit. A decent highwind rig and board could have been had at the swap yesterday for less than $500 buck I rekon?
See you down at Spirit, That is such a great lake to sail!
