Windless Wondering.

Post by steveb »

Having just gone through the first weekend without wind for a long time, and feeling a little cheated " Hey it's saturday, time to go kiting". Saturday Nancy and I were looking at each other with a "what do we do now" questioning look.
We actually caught up on some decent bicycle mileage, we're far behind our usual mileage at this time of the year. We just keep getting to kite at the weekends.
It got me to wondering what you Boardheads do when there's no wind, in summer we bike ride ,kayak and get our sailboat out. Worst case scenario we do chores.
What other games do you get up to?

I spent countless hours surfing the web looking for recreational things to buy that I can't afford, like:
Maybe I can squeez a new cabrinha contra 17m bow on my credit card so I can get out now on light wind, or maybe a PWC is what I need and it's not that much more on the home equity line of credit, or maybe I need a new snow board already and that would be much less than the above 2 items so I would actually feel responsible for buying it and not the other 2. Or maybe the Manta ray flying tube I just posted isn't that dangerous

good grief, please some wind soon to keep me out of further debt!

Steve,

As usual, my solution for your windless days, would have you parting with some cash (lot's of it):

One thing I've noticed is that all photos of the Powerski in action are on smooth water, no chop.

I'm with you Steve - pounding out the miles on my road bike. Don't have much time to race anymore but I still enjoy riding.

Here's a good one though: Father's Day - I commit to go on a morning group ride figuring it's not going to blow. I can't go ride AND go sailing ("Pick one or the other", my wife said). I go do a 4 hour ride over in Hudson and by late afternoon it's blowing like stink. At that point I'm in over my head with full on family duty! Argggg!!! Back in the day (PK = Pre-kids) I could go race/ride and then go sail in the afternoon. Oh well. The winds will be back. July in MN sucks....unless it's a hard-core draught year ('88!!!!).

well I hate to say it Steve but I had lots and lots of rideing last weekend. even sunday on waconia.

the only reason I have been able to ride is because of a free peice of plywood and a litle cutting, sanding and grinding. I made a skimboard with a FLAT botom and it made it possiable to ride the super light wind.

Motel 6

Post by JRN »

Now I know why Motel 6 is missing a coffe table! I want embedded cup holders in mine. I'm putting those extra foot straps on my beer cooler.
It may not blow, but I won't care. JN P.S: Nice picture of Denis btw.

Hey Steve,

Wondering what this boardhead does in the no wind zone. Well, I tell you chores usually end up at the top of my list of family duties, and then there's biking, canoeing, gardening, oh did I mention the chores..... My 14 year old daughter needs a constant chauffer.... I'm trying to get the family into windsurfing. Hoping to teach my daughter and get her hooked. That would greatly increase the number of sailing days for me. Oh, and then there's that full time job that ties me down. I think you dropped by on a sales call when we first moved into our new building a couple of years ago ( in Ham Lake). Unfortunately, my other half doesn't sail and always wants to go camping, hiking and that whole deal. If I could just get him hooked, I'm sure my whole life could change in regards to my ability to chase the wind. As it is, they get jeolous when I take off and leave them for the wind. I've definitely learned that I don't go sailing unless I have the green light from the family; otherwise, I'm out there on the water thinking of them and the things they wanted me to do.....the guilt of it all. I'm hoping to get some time off from lifes duties soon. As always, praying for wind on the days I finally get off.... I must admit to being a tiny bit envious of the kiters that can go in the lighter winds. Hope you all are having a great summer. :D

I've usually got another board in the works in my basement. It is so much fun to try new things with board design. Plus, you are still investing time in kiteboarding. Latest creation has PVC rails and flexy tips. We'll see how it comes out...which is also part of the fun.

Hey Jon,

I don't know if this old dog could learn all those new tricks.... At 42, my jibing still sucks and I haven't mastered this yet so....since it's taken me 22 years to get this far... Plus, all the cash I've laid out for this sport..... But, never say never. That's one thing I've learned. It does look like fun. The shots you posted were cool. One of the main things that got me into windsurfing beyond my love of the water is the ability to do it by yourself. When I see all the long lines and help needed to launch, I'm happy to lug my gear to the beach. I'm sure it's probably easy once you know what you are doing like anything else....

Hopefully Milly will blow soon. I'm wind deprived and having other wind addicts to talk to certainly helps. I know at home they are so sick of hearing about the wind that I have learned to keep my mouth shut and just 'be' happy doing whatever I'm stuck doing and then when I finally do make it to the beach it's so sweet....thanks for listening. Hope to see you out there soon.

Jenny....yup that was me.. I hope things are going well.
Wow what a diverse bunch....I think Tom wins the best Toy award. Hopfully all of these hobbies, especially the chores, will get to be neglected through fall.
Right now my new hobby is sweating, seems it's a fast learning curve and I'm very good at it. Man I hate heat!!!!. It's my poor northern european blood just can't handle it.
Snow...now there's a thought, lovely cold snow, walking out the door of your house and having the cold crisp air give you an instant wake up, better than caffeine. Ahhh! I'd love to be cold....Soon.

Hey Steve,

Things are going pretty well on the business side of things. Stop in when you are in the area and check out the windsurfing photo gallery in our entry area. Hope business is going well for you. I hear ya on the heat....It makes everything so much more fun like getting the frozen foods home. Gotta pack the coolers for a 10 minute drive. But hey, this is Minnesota where the weather is always changing. Gotta love it. Sounds like you and Nancy are having a blast kiting. Must be great to have a partner that's hooked on the wind too!!!!!! Hope to see you guys out there. Stay coooool. jenny

tom...do you have any first hand info on these guys?

if not, i can help.

i invested a small fortune with them in the late 90's. bob montgomery...the guy in the photo...said they would be to market in a year at the latest. my wife and i did all the due diligence (sp?) ahead of time. visited them in california, spent months doing research and trying to ask all the right questions.

as of today...8 - 9 years later, i don't think they are yet at full production, but i'll bet a lot of investers have put money into a really good marketing company. bob is a great sales person, but will turn on ya quickly if you aren't on the band wagon.

the product is cool for sure. too bad the company is run the wrong way. they spend tons of money on trade shows getting the word out, doing cool videos, but should spend it all on R and D and production. Oh well.

lessons learned the hard way.

if anyone wants to buy my shares, 50% off to anyone.
