Sounds like its s'posed to CRANK! Maybe we can get you out on that short-board, John. I couldn't believe the whole lake was completely empty yesterday. The POWER of Motherhood?

FYI - If there's a lot of N in the wind Bellaire won't be nu-b kiter friendly - directly onshore...especially if it's gusting to 30.
Anyone know if the "furniture" is in at Mahto yet??? Might be a better launch there tomorrow depending on direction.
Hope to windsurf the gap tomorrow or head to St. Marys - if it's 340-350 degrees St. Mary's point might be better.

St Mary's is on this map: http://map.web.mapquest.com/?e=9&GetMap ... 0062%3a%26
Awesome on a north wind, but if you wipe out, you could find yourself in Iowa, and who wants to go there? (Just kidding! I know full well that windsurfing is one of the few reasons why someone might want to go there.)

If you do it right, I'll bet you could launch right off the public dock. I've walked my board out to the end of the dock, hopped on, and cruised away. Someone who's more experienced with kiting should confirm if this is a good idea or not. There could be a very good reason why you shouldn't do it and I just don't know.
Red Flag
I wouldn't dare launching a kite from a dock unless you were at the end of the dock with a directly offshore wind. and no obstructions whatsoever
you could get drug across the dock or lofted up in the air and smashed aginst it.
doen't sound like the safest idea in the world
I don't think I would eaven want to walk down a dock with a kite hooked to me.... Maby with milly smoth wind

Axo - you might want to try WildWood as well - posted by Coach
You probably found the right spot. It's actually Wildwood Beach (the area), but the access is probably Birchwood Beach:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q ... 12231&om=1
(the beach doesn't appear on the map, but the road does - right near Doover Ln.
If you were next to the apartment building, you had the spot. There are some docs around, but it's shallow quite a ways out. You can actually walk upwind a LONG way outside the docs, if needed. If the wind is right, this is a great little beach. North or NNW winds.
It's also still launchable at Birchwood between the holidays once the beach junk goes in at Mahtomedi.

Well yes, I agree. The dock at Mahto is L shaped, with the end of the L pointing south. In effect, you would be sitting on the end of the L with the wind at your back. In this position, there is some distance from the next dock to the south. I wouldn't want to traverse the length of the dock attached to the kite either. That's got bad idea written all over it. To execute safely, you'd have to walk the kite out in the water and back yourself up to the dock, then hop up on it. Once you're sitting on the edge, I suppose you could get the kite airborn and it would pull you right off the edge and away you go, but this from someone who's never kited.
