It is a great little town and a nice lake, but I would not make the trip if it were not for the early ice out. There are better lakes closer to the cities. See the Lakes section above for more about the lake.

Clear Lake-Sunday

Post by Tony »

Sailed Clear Lake Sunday in lite winds; but planed with an 8.5 and a GT85.
Great day! Lake opens early because of aerators out about 200 yards from shore. Probably would not be very good in summer because of algae growth- it's very shallow.

Clear lake sailing

Post by RobH »

Summer sailing is good in Clear Lake, I lived there for 12 years. The lake is shallow and has had some problems with water quality, however there are many efforts and much $$$$ going into the lake to bring it back. The lake is actually higher than the surronding countryside so when it blows it is great to sail. Also weeds are no problem. The lake itself is like the Minnatonka of Iowa as far as boat traffic goes - but on those big wind days the boats stay home! Email me if you have any questions about launches, the lake or the town.
Nice to have an option of open water this time of year only 2 hours south!

How shallow? Can you touch everywhere? Weeds are no problem for kiters since the fins are so small.

I was down there Tuesday - itchin' to go out. The wind was out of the NE and it's basically the eastern thrid (or forth) that is not frozen.

I was a little worried about venturing out in offshore winds with no one else around. Found a nic launch on the south side of the lake, but it was still frozen.

Wow! Looks like a nice side-on down there now. Looks like plenty of ice free water to play in. I saved the picture at:

I'm still waiting for my new drysuit! I can't wait.
