Need a GPS recommendation

Post by johnz »

I'd like one for kiting (water / snow), general hiking, and boating. It looks like the Garmin Foretrex 201 doesn't have mapping capabilities.

Any thoughts?

Not sure what you mean by " mapping capabilities. "

The display is very basic but you can offload your track info and use other "Map" software to display where and when into full colour and detail.

If you are need to see "maps" on your GPS, You'll want to check out the Garmin Legend or Vista colour units. You can upload map data to them and display it as needed.

I have a legend that works pretty well, it wasn't to spendy 180 for the unit and 100 for the maps. The map software really is the key to it though as far as road detail, personaly it fits my needs, I'm still trying to find a way to get it on my mast in some sort of water proof pouch or something, if anyone has any idea's that would be helpful.

GPS

I've been a big fan of Garmin GPS's and have owned quite a few over the years. For windsurfing, biking, etc, the simple wrist or arm wearable ForeTrex is a good bet. It will provide speed, max speed, distance traveled, average speed and simple graphic representation of where went. The 'track' of where you went can be downloaded to software for mapping or there is an interesting website, motionbased.com, that you can download the data to for mapping and analysis. The 201 is about $150. The only downside is that their claim of being waterproof is somewhat iffy. My first ForeRunner (a model more for running) failed the first time I took it windsurfing. But it was cheerfully exchanged at REI as it was under warranty. I've used the replacement in the water without problems.

If you want more functionality, mapping on the unit, barometric altitude, compass, etc, then I recommend the Vista C. It is great for finding your way in cities (with optional higher detail maps, on the water (with water depth charts--BlueChart). But it is expensive and the cost of the maps quickly add up. With the City Select maps set, it will even provide driving directions with turn warnings like the ones in cars. On cross country trips, I attach it to my laptop and have on-screen mapping and street guide.

I hope this helps.
