Lake Independence

Post by pgbrambi »

Hi,

Does anyone ever kite Lake Independence in Maple Plain? Baker Park has a pretty open beach and stretches the majority of the east side of the lake. I'll be in town this weekend from Chicago and curious if this could be an alternative to Waconia.

I know people windsurf independence all the time. I don't know if anyone has kited there yet tho. It's probably not so full of beach goers now that summer vacation is over.

I used to windsurf there occasionally. I've only ever seen 1 kiter there. The lake is only 850 acres and usually crowded on weekends (maybe not in September). You'll do ok if there aren't a lot of boats/swimmers and the wind is not blocked by the high hill with the log retaining wall (i.e. S SE isbad). N thru SW should be OK.

I checked some data, and it should be pretty shallow around the swim beach area, with a 1.4 mile fetch on a NW & 1 mile on a W. So it's doable, if you can work around the swim beach or if there is no one there.

After a second look on Google Earth, I agree that the forecast S winds on Saturday might not be ideal for this lake. Thanks for the feedback!
