Windsurfing in Door County
I am heading to the Sturgeon Bay area next weekend. Does anybody know anything about the windsurfing scene in in that area??
Door county
I found Baileys harbor the best for either windsurfing or kiting on a S, SW, SE with warmer water . Try sand beach resort on Green Bay side near Potowatomi State park, or anywhere south of Sturgean Bay for NW,W. Also Ephraim on NW on Green bay side toward the tip o' the thumb. Go to Rock island for epic kiting with cold water (need to take two ferrys however). Locals agreed with me. Talk to Stein at kite shop in Fish creek or at least they will have his number. (Very nice guy from Hawaii who also teaches.) Also Kangaroo lake is really good on S when the big lake is shut down. Door county can provide some of the best windsurfing in the world when it goes off, so come prepared. Enjoy. Greg

Kevin I will be up in Door Co. this weekend also. I rent a cottage in Gills Rock so go back and forth between Mpls and Door all summer I am familar with the windsurfing places. Over the 4th of July weekend every year they hold a windsurfing regatta in Ephraim. Lots of sailors from all over. Its the best place for Northwest or North winds. Not the best for west but it works. Good grass rigging area behind the information center right on 42. Plenty of parking. Sideshore winds .
I agree with the previous reply.Baileys Harbor is the absolute best place to sail in south or Southeast wind. Its about a 30minute drive north of Sturgeon Bay. Go to Anclam park at the south edge of town. There is a big park with sand beach and grass rigging area behind the restrooms. Its sideshore and the swells can get pretty big when the wind blows.
Its about a two mile reach across the bay.
Its also great for kiting since the launch area is very shallow and if you can't stay upwind or the wind is light you will eventually drift down to a sandy beach and can walk back on the city sidewalk. Lots of local kiters. If you are looking for Stein thats where he hangs out.
Kangaroo Lake is just 5 minutes from the beach at Baileys. You can usually rig 1/2 to 1 m smaller sail here than in Lake Michigan. The lake is long and narrow and the wind channels. Its a great place to sail also.
Remember to bring booties. You don't need them in Baileys Harbor but almost everywhere else is rocky. Water is about 60 degrees as of last Thursday.
Give me a call on my WI cell if you like. 920 421 1054.
