me and a buddy are heading to south padre on friday (28th) for two weeks to do a lot of windsurfing and a lot of partying.
we plan on tent camping.
is it still legal to camp in certain areas on the beach? cost?
anyone going to be down there around this time?
anything we should make sure not to forget or any suggestions for things to do besides windsurf (like when the wind is down, nighttime, etc.)
this is our first time in south padre so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dave

Dave,
The guys I kiteboard with down here at Okoboji/Spirit Lake are also heading down to Padre Friday. Unfortunatly not being self-employed, I won't be in.
One of the guys, Jessie has been there several times. I do recall him mentioning that there were some problems with camping on the beach and being that it was not spring break, the hotels were very cheap. I don't know that personally. I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you figure out what to do with your spare time in Padre. Look for a red and black 10 and 14 SS Fuel & a 9 and 13 Liquid Force. I'll email a number if you like.

Talk to Teran Huges and Phillip Money at http://www.kiteboardinc.com/ Those guys have the scoop on the local scene and are very cool and knowledgeable. Teran speaks "Minnasodan" as he is originally from around here and Phillip is a true southern gentelman.
You will want to spend some time in their shop incase you break somthing down there.
I was looking at the website and thought it would be cool to do the "Padre Powder Run" We should do somthing like that on Mille Lacs this year. On a south wind, drop some guys of on the south end of the lake and then the other guys could go up to Reddy Creek and kite and wait for the downwinders to come in while kiting onshore conditions.
I'd be up for that!

sounds like a great idea Eric. We may want to hug one side of the lake for safety reasons, though that'd be awesome. It would tough deciding who would do which part...downwinder or onshore.
Let's not forget this idea.
I agree with Eric. Stop by, hang out and sail from Windsurf Inc. They are good guys, are very knowledgable and have hot showers (remember it's salt water sailing). Have a great time.

Maybe we could get a support boat and film this adventure. Personally I like the idea of being 'right out in the middle' of the lake. It would probably be foolish to do with out some kind of support vessel. Heck I broke a line on Waconia and it took me some time to get back to shore. I don't think a 10 mile swim with my kite gear would be fun. You would be a small dot out there in the middle of the lake.
The reason I would like to go right out to the middle is because when I sailed from Tampa to Key West I got a certain buzz that is hard to explain. When land becomes a thin film on the horizon and then vanishes before your eyes, your gut flip-flops and suddenly it's like you just woke up into a dream.
It's you, the crew, the boat and the weather. At the same time you are in control of everything, and nothing.
Perhaps a Mille Lacs downwinder can spark some of those old memories but it would be a real good idea to have some support vehicle.

how about waterproof cell phones/pagers etc and have someone at the marina on call. If we had a GPS it would be pretty easy to find us. Something about being out in the middle of the lake without a motor boat would be amazing. But the idea of having some photos would be cool. We could write a story submit it to one of the mags. OUR FRESH WATER ADVENTURE>>>
Maybe we should just do it and have it in our minds.

Awesome!
Can you just imagine being out in the middle of Mille Lacs with 3-5 kiter buddies finding some swell to ride on?!?!? It would be so great that I probably would find it hard to kite because I would be laughing my head off!
I wonder what the swell is like in the middle with 15-20 mph?
It will certainly get better the farther you go downwind.
I bought my dad a portable VHF marine radio for xmas. That would be a good thing to have. It doesn't matter if YOU know your possition (GPS) it matters if OTHERS know your possition (TRANSMIT).
Coach was talking about "peepers" a few months back. Are there any waterproof peepers that cost less then a few hundered bucks?
unknown....
