Mille Lacs Looked Okay

Post by Jim N »

Stopped past Millelacs on Wed. last week on my way from Princeton to Duluth. It had 4 or 5 " of hard pack over the ice but looked "kiteable"
anyway. Don't know what effect this weekend's thaw will have. I'm kinda hoping for some smooth ice by Monday in the Cities with options for snow "up north." I'm not going top sharpen my blades 'til then!! :) Jim N>

Smooth ice would be nice, my lake was pretty smooth but had a few spots where the ice was crusty and would make you face plant on skates. Also it had some really rough spots that would be pretty hard on skates. Hopefully we will get more snow this year, I want to kite with my snowboard. Hopefully mille lacs wont melt and we can still go up there. Were 2 feet behind on snow this year, right now would be a perfect time to get some of that! :D

Yeah, I would have to agree with ya Hunter. We are way behind on the snow. But its better late then never. Eh? I just wish it would dump a few feet of snow on the lakes. I have a brand new board that i want to kite with too. Peace!

I drove around M.L. today, it had quite good cover. I went around the North end. If we had some wind it would be quite ridable.

There was warm snow in decent quantities when I left on Sunday near Malmo. good enough for Xcoutry trail breaking near shore and in areas that hadn't been trampled by snowmobiles out on the lake. There was enough east wind on Sunday to fly my 1.5 meter trainer. It started to rain late Sunday PM. I hope this week brings more snow. I talked to someone in Isle and they said they had only gotte a couple of inches last night.

I was riding up at Reddy Creek, Sunday and have to say it was one of my best days of kitesnowboarding. The 4' high pressure ridge was ligned up perfect with the wind direction for ramp jumping. The snow temp was perfect for edging in 2" of top soft surface. I was eager to demo a new Escape kite specific snowboard just recieved. It was a sweet ride, but still my favorite is my 173 cm. mounted with the Switchblade. Most likely will be riding up there again this weekend.

Jerry , Where is Reddy Creek? I was up at mille Lacs on Sunday, I didn't see anyone, I was off hunter's point by myself, the conditions were good until it started to rain. Then the kite gained too much weight to fly in the light winds.
Could you shoot me a Mapquest of the location? :?:

Hey Doc,

Reddy is approx. 4 mi. west of Malmo. See "Lakes" of this site. I rode from 11am 'til 3. Pretty wet weather when I cruised by Hunter's on way home. Wished we could have rode together. It was great! :D

Now area lakes around here looks good to break out the Freeskates again.
By the feel & bite of wind, lots of winter is still left.

I kited on Mille Lacs today. No loose snow, but very nice firm, smooth, and fast snow surface. No bare ice like here. Snow depth varied from 1/2 inch to 6 inches. Well worth the drive with the kind of conditions the city lakes have. I could see clouds dumping snow on the northern and eastern parts of the lake while I was there. I don't know how much fell.
