Ditch the windsurfer, the iceboard is where it's at

Not sure why Eric is still looking for frigid liquid. If you've never tried a freeskate or iceboard, you are missing out. Limitless speed, easy jibes, fun tricks not possible on the water (for normal humans), small sails, and very little wind required. Boards are pretty easy to homebuild for very li...

Re: Free skate iceboard dawn patrol on Waconia now.

The ice was much smoother than previous weekend. Withe the warm temperatures, the ice was super fast. Wind was way too much. My smallest sail tightened board flat was still way overpowered. Really needed about a 2.5 or 3.0 for today. But it still put a smile on my face.

Free skate iceboard dawn patrol on Waconia now.

Ice is good. Wind is scary. Getting in a few hours before the ice softens. Windsurfing on the rise!

Gettin' Wacky

Waconia is awesome today on the iceboard. The snow is about 0" - 1", but every once in a while I would hit a 3" drift and slow down. Always kept front foot forward to avoid the catapult. Ice is a little bumpy, but nothing the board can't handle easily. I can't believe no one else is h...

Re: SWEDE LAKE ICE REPORT!

Saturday was really , really slow. I sat around alone and drank tequila most of the time, but got a good ride a few times. It's amazing how you can go 10-15 MPH on a a 3-4 MPH wind. Call me nuts, but these 2 minute long rides are worth sitting around all day for. I never did put on the helmut or the...

SWEDE LAKE ICE REPORT!

Swede Lake (north of Waconia ) has 3 inches of smooth sailable ice. If you stayed local this weekend, come on out! Not much wind today, but probably enough. I am going to see up the ice surfer / free skate / windsurfer thing. I also drove by Waconia, which is half froze and will lock in tonight.

Think Ice !!

While Eric keeps yearning for December open water, I am thinking ice. Time to dig out the padding, sharpen up the blades, and think ice!!!! The freeskate iceboard is the ultimate rush in my book. It combines the low drag dynamics of iceboating with the freedom of windsurfing. If you have never tried...

Gettin' Wacky

Waconia was awesome on Sunday! I was a little scared by all the boat trailers in the parking lot, but all the boats were parked by the island, hiding from the wind. I was on a 5.8, which means most sane people were on about a 5.0. So much fun I didn't even stop for a break until the break........ My...

Re: Safe Ice anywhere near metro area?

As of 10 AM Saturday, Swede lake has 1.5 - 2.0 inches of ice. Waconia is locked in with about 1 inch of ice and several holes in the middle.

Re: Safe Ice anywhere near metro area?

There has been iceboating on lake Christina near ashby MN the last two weekends, but still fairly thin with holes. With the current cold, it should be OK on Saturday. This one is an early freeze due to consistent shallow depth, so I doubt you will find anything else closer.

Re: Sailboard registration.

I believe since it is a non-powered craft under 12 feet, they are excempt. I have been windsurfing for about 5 years on a heavily patrolled lake (waconia) and never had even a question. Never seen anyone else register either. Not an issue. Where are you planning to go? Low winds this weekend, but ha...

It was pretty darn slow. Lots of practice running and jumping on the board. The ice is awesome!!! A bad day sailing beats a good day anywhere else. :D

Re: ANY FREESKATING SAT?

I will be out on the freeskate on bald eagle lake, near WBL. Ice is good. I will be launching at Reed's (where all the ice boats are). Hope to be there by 10 am, and will on the freeskate until 1, then hopefully racing the iceboat. Call if you want to meet up. I am still a beginner on this freeskate...
