The Sea (Lake Pepin) was "angry" that day my friends....
I'm not a Marine Biologist, (like George Castanza) but a Windsurfer!
And here is my story on that day of March 16, 2016.
Launch site,,Pepin Marina of Village of Pepin Wisconsin on the shores of the Mississippi (wide segm. of river is called Lake Papin). Tim V. and Pete G. finished their session around 3:30pm. I just came in and Pete said he took some photos of me
(very nice of him to do that). He said, you shouldn't go all across to Minnesota side in this weather and still being still winter,..that's a"Suicide Mission" if you have gear breakdown. Well, when they left,..I went out for another "Suicide mission!"
I figured, it's not very often they we get to have 40 mph winds (gusts to 50) here in the Midwest so,,,go to take advantage.
As I crossed over to MN side again a barge was approached from upstream. It was just the pusher (the white "pushboat")
but still a big vessel It's huge, with two stacks, radar and about five stores high. Kind of the size of the Delta Queen.
I crossed it's bow with about 100 yards of save distance. Thenk I thought I just rest and wait in the water for it to pass by.
It passed by heading downstream,,but then maybe the crew thought I was in trouble since I was in the water and the bardge turned around and came back and just stopped in front of me about 50 yards from me. I though,,"Oh great just like
some fishing boats do...they they I need help." Well I motioned with my arm saying, "get out of my way." You are in my way!
The barge complied and then parked (hovered) itself 50 yards upstream (upwind) of me. "Now blocking my wind!"
I just decided to bear off downwind, got a gust (somehow it came over that 5-story vessel) and blasted away back to Wisconsin so that they could never rescue me!
I got back to Village of Pepin and looked back and the barge got back on course and headed downstream again.
You can se two photos of this March windsurfer opener by scrolling down this same section of Lakawa of convestions section
it's around March 17th, titled "Mississippi lit up!" What's in your quiver of wind stories? let's hear it! Eric out.
