quarter-mile offshore in an unguarded stretch of ocean...The lifeguard paddled to him on a rescue board, pulled the man away from the sharks and carried him back to shore.

UM, I think I would have had a difficult time getting myself up to do that last manover. Ever seen the photos of surfers from below compared to seals? You can see why people get eaten by sharks.

Wow....really unlucky guy.
Part of you thinks , great way to go doing something you love, kiteboarding.
Another part thinks, what an awful way to go, must have been terrifying.
Shitty news.

man major bummer! condolences to his family and friends, sounded like a really nice guy.
yeah Geo that life guard has some balls, but guess thats his job so cheers to him that was really brave.
he must have lost his board or crashed etc... I know when riding the Coast in OR when I fall off the surfboard and I am body dragging for the board it always feels like Im just chumming along, its in the back of your head but you try not to think about it.

When they say this is an extreme sport this doesn't come to mind. Probably my MN mindset. I do wonder at times which big perch is looking up at me.

Bummer

I always 'chicken out' and wear a board (reel) leash when in the ocean because I get too freaked out body dragging around and trying to find my board in those moving mountains, rip tides, etc.

Lesser of two evils.... maybe

My condolences to his friends, family, and fellow water-fun buddies...
