I'll be hitting Swede by noon. I measured 6 inches of ice this morning. Waconia still had a few open patches of water.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up,totally worn out and loudly proclaiming. WOW! What a ride!!
Phelps bay and Spring Park bay have good ice. But bigger bays are not safe. Main Lake is still open water. We need a cold night with no wind. I might get out this weekend on Pheps or Spring Park Bay.
I will be heading to the southern metro early sat am. With the addition of the snow overnight tonight coupled with the 5" they got the other day there should no doubt be a field to hit up. Plus my skates are dull so swede is out of the question for me since you cannot sharpen t-blades and I dont want to pay 17$ a skate for new blades.
Not sure where yet, Im planning on driving to jordan then work my way towards farmington and see what I come up with. According to the star tribune the bullseye from the storm earlier in the week was in that area somewhere. Your welcome to hit me up and see if ive found anything yet.

I think I will go to Forest Lake. I rode there last weekend and the ice was safe from the downtown access to the South. After the cold weather we had the past week, most of the rest of the lake is likely good to go. I was up north of White Bear tonight, and the snowfall was prety good up that way. You can put on at the downtown public access, or at one of the fire roads off South Shore drive. It is definately a safer option than White Bear Lake.
I had 2 sessions on Turtle Lake in Shoreview. The ice seems plenty thick now. There is a thin snow layer along the S shore. I should be there later this morning. Lake Nokomis in MPLS is even better, but only for southerlies.
Witha couple of inches of snow we got last night, Turtle Lake should be OK with skies as well. I will give it a try today around 11 am. An icefisherman told me last week they were fishing by the preassure ridge (a ways out) but there is still open water in the midle. Stear clear of the boat launch boat area since it is a bit deeper than the beach area.

I drilled a bunch of holes on Spring lake and found 4-5 inches of ice. One spot with no snow had 8". While I got out kiteboarding I seen one of those snowless spots with a 2' round open hole. It was good enough to board w/o a switchblade although it would have helped. Most was fluffy 2+" of powder with 6+" drift and bare spots here and there. It was great to be on the board for the first session of the season. Lighter, typical midwest come and go wind though. Took awhile to find all my winter gear.
MikeF let me know what you found for open fields around this area. I haven't found any great ones. There's a church off 35W near cliff road that some guys ride at.
