Baskin - stoked to hear your making it out to the Gorge. MaryHill is nice for camping and it's a good spot to stop when you first hit the Gorge but in July and August the action (wind-wise) typically happens further West(Hood River to Rowena). You may want to set up camp a little closer to Hood River. Good spots include Tucker Park, Viento (if you don't mind loud trains at 2a.m.) and Memaloose.
camping at the Gorge
Thanks, Dave. Yep, I think that would be the plan. Viento's camp information says "no reservations - first come, first serve basis". I will try there. I am also adding Tucker Park and Memaloose to the list of other campsites. I was told to travel 30-40 miles every day to get to a good spot of sailing which agrees with your comments.
I will wear ear plugs at night. I heard train traffic is very heavy there.

called Tucker park - usually vacant...
Thanks for the tip on the Tucker Park, Tighe. Called them up yesterday. Although they are not taking reservations, I was told they have over 80 tent sites, and there is vacancy. I will have to shorten the 10 day reservation I made at the Maryhill State Park. I am also reading a book on Columbia River Area (Moon Handbooks: Columbia River Gorge: Including Complete Coverage of Portland), there are similar remarks in this book as well.
Thanks again.
