I went up for the day. It was crankin about the same as that last day that was crankin. I decided on not bringing my short lines, sigh. John was rockin on the 12 xbow though. Jude (I think) was killin it on a 9 xbow.

Strange thing after a wave gobbled my board, I was moving around tring to get my board and all of a sudden my chicken loop release... RELEASED !!!???? what the heck? any of you xbow flyers have that happen? I had my leash on so no worries but it kinda suprised me.

7:30 Friday -

Sky Harbor is still crankin (20-25 kts) as good as yesterday, but its wet now. (Not that it makes any difference when you're in the lake). I'm at work in Canal Park, and it is not blowing very hard here. Unless there are guys camped out up here and can sail the middle of the point in the AM, I would guess this thing is done.

LOTS of fun yesterday. Sailed in a shorty, had kites, boards, kayaks and surfers everwhere.

For those newbies to Superior, these were fairly classic conditions. The wind regularly settles into about that wind range. If you are sailing, you need to know that you must rig up from what you might expect, feeling the conditions on the beach. Depending on how far you sail off shore, the required sail and or board could change. Yesterday, I was on a small board, maybe 80L with a 5.2. I think I was probably on the biggest sail out there. I could only sail on the inside with that much sail, and had difficulty if I even went to the fringe. I would have been way overpowered trying to sail on the outside. As the conditions lightened up, I had to go to the outside to keep powered up. There is fine line there, you need more power than you would like on the outside in order to punch out through the edge of the shore break…

More later….

I was contemplating that line all day yesterday and most of the ride home...
Out on a 5.7/83L early in the day (noonish) when Diego was on a 5.0/114L and a couple others were on 5.8's...flattened it out as much as possible when some came in to rig down. Then I finally came in and re-rigged a 5.2 and did two more sessions on that. The middle two sessions were probably the most fun (last 5.7 and first 5.2), but I was significantly over-powered most of the day. Though being only my second real day on the big lake, the extra power was a nice security blanket blasting out through the shorebreak; which facilitated my first real extended rides on the outside. BUT, once out there, as you said Chip, I was holding on for dear life and when I went down (somewhat less frequently than last time) the bigger sail was even more to deal with in the waves.

SO....Maybe I will go a little smaller next time if I can...or at least my arms are telling me that might be a good solution today.

Classic!!

Post by Randy »

Chip, you put it well with your summary work, "classic". I have very little credibility left with my wife, because everytime I come back from one of these days, I'm lit, saying it was the "best yet". I still maintain the waves set up the best in the 17-25mph range.
Got up there around 10, shortly followed by the Virginia, MN, windsurf crew...a group of die hards who's been seen at every windy event I've been to lately. I rigged my 5.9 Loft, got ready to go out, and kiters Judd and Diane Nelson showed up. Soooo, change of plan, rig the 12M kite, and take the opportunity to learn from their experience. It was perfect...waves on the outside nicely formed, ideal power, and a great opportunity to experiment with waves and jumping. Definitely a lot easier getting out through the whitewater with a kite.
I broke my leash and Judd kindly retrieved my board a couple times. Coming in, Judd caught my kite and I unhooked to retrieve the kite. When I went to wrap my lines, I noticed my chicken loop had released. It must have caught in the wash, and subsequently disppeared in the rip.
Back to windsurfing, on the 5.9M, perfect on the inside, but now a little big on the outside. Cruise over to the canal lighthouse for the gallery and some amazing water terrain, shortly joined by Judd on his kite, a little more play, back to Tot Lot, now the lake filling with more kites and windsurfers... It's now 1pm and time to rig down to my 5M. Great to see Ben, abstinate since May, Phil, Diego, Jonathon, and a few others. Heading out Nathan, Stroh, Mike Winter are frantically rigging their kites and adjusting to building conditions. My 5M is perfect for busting through the whitewash and playing the outside. The terrain was about as good as it gets...waves good size, but not moving too fast, and not so big they hurt when you went down.
When I left, Judd was going down to Diane's 9M!!! I don't think I've ever seen him on a kite this small. Mike went on a 7M. Looking for some stories, guys. I had to be back in the Cities and hated leaving, but today I'm glad cause I probably won't need the two week recovery from the last two day session up there.
Anyway, so good to see more of you realizing the heavenly sailing that's available right here in Minnesota. Yesterday was one of those days where it just doesn't get any better.
Chip...keep posting your wisdom on this...sorry I had to leave before you got there.
Ride...just be it!

Well Randy, I was well rewarded for my abstinence huh?!!! What a sweet session. 4.5M sail 1:30 to 5:00. Perfect on the inside and just a bit too much on the outside. Warm water, big ramps both starboard and port! The waves pretty well spaced. It was awesome to see Judd and Diane. Even more awesome to watch Judd fly his kit!!!!!! Holy crap, BIG AIR!! Judd rips. Great to meet some newbies from the big city. Hope to have some more of that Superior goodness as the fall season unfolds.

It was great to see so many enjoying the epic conditions yesterday. I showed up around 2pm to find stronger wind than I have ever seen up there. Readings showed high 20s to lower 30s throughout the later afternoon. It was hard to look into the wind around the parking lot because of the sand blast coming off the beach. Terry, Nate and Stroh showed up when I did. Judd, Diane, and and Ben were in between sessions. Diego was ripping it up on the water. Randy was rigging down. Some others were there whose names I don’t know.

Judd was right when he told me that a 12m bow was barely doable. I went out for 15-20 minutes, completely lit. I decided to rig a 7m C kite I bought for my daughter. Stroh fought it out on his 12 Crossbow. Nathan was stylin on his 12m (really a 10m) Octane. Judd battled waves admirably on his 12 Crossbow before jumping on Diane’s 9m. I was amazed by how well powered I was on the 7m. You really don’t need much kite in the waves.

Judd gets the iron man award for his relentless wave slashing. Stroh gets honorable mention for hanging onto his 12 through it all. Diane impressed me by having the courage to brave these conditions for her first time on a kite. Nathan gets the style award for pulling some flashy tricks off wave faces. Randy looked great as always.

Sweet day! I was only able to get up there because my wife got released from jury duty in the morning. As soon as I got the call, I was packing the car.

Thursday was Huge when we showed up to the tot lot the sand was pileing up in the parking lot you couldn't eaven breath with out inhaling sand. I got right out onto the water with the 12 bow with in 1 min I was eaten by at least 3 smaller waves. then I got out the the big breakline to see some 12 foot monsters about ready to chash ontop of me. it took a while to get used to it, figureing out when to run screaming from them or to try to get over them. some of the time I found it impossable for me to get out past the breakers and I had no shortage of power. one time I came in wayyyyy over powered (but still in control with the 12xbow) I decided to check sky harbors readings it said 26 gust to 35 and I think that's in knots.

Thursday was more of survival kiteing for me. I was just trying to ride without getting crushed by mountians of whitewater.
I can't wait till the next time it blows NE over 30mph.... I'll be there

Terry took some video of Nathan and myself... It's in the works

Unfortunately this is an example of how much more range Bows have over Hybrids. I know most of the industry is going to hybrids because of the issues some people have with bows, but for me the true bows, with their massive range, one kite does all, outways any finickyness. Like Stroh on the 12m last thursday, I have been on my 12m in winds over 30mph and in winds less than 10mph. Actually the day I rode in 30+ winds I went back and forth from a 6m bow to a 12m bow. Both worked.

Unfortunately only a few companies are continuing with the bow this year, Cab, Airrush, Slingshot, GK?, while most are going the direction of the Waroo. The majority really prefer the feel of the hybrid, though I personally love the bows...takes a bit to tame the beast, though once you do the dance is well worth it. Again I think it is great to have options, find a ride that works for you.

my 2 cents, and only that.

oh and by the way, I am so envious that all of you have scored such great sessions on the Mother. Schedules just haven't worked for me to make them happen. Love the recaps.

In the last 2 weeks or so that I have been using the 12 corssbow it has been the only kite I have had to pump up. under 10mph on my skimboard is no problem and I need about 15-20 to get on my 125. alot of the days the wind wasn't very consitant, and I know if I was using my "C" kites I would have had to pump up 3 kites.

The AIR is insane on that 12... I hate to say it But I think it's better than the wipika wip. I had a jump on the mother that I was able to compleetly control my hight... I was going up up and up I started to get a litle worried so I just let the bar out about 2 inches and instantly started to slowly decend :D :D :D these kites are great

I dont mind C kites yanking me arround a bit but it shure is a good fealing when your colse to a beach and you don't have to worry too much about Lofting 8)

I'M sold I am switching to bows.... as soon as I can afford one.... looking for a 12 crossbow 1st gen used... I don't care if it's torn up as long as the price right...

Stroh - Check out eBay....there are 12M 4 Cbow's up for auction. Kevin Ozee also has used Cabs at http://neilprydemaui.com or hit up Bob Cook down in Madison (aka Toyletbowl) he may have some deals.

No way!

Actually, you can get more air on a bow cause you can take out a bigger kite for the same conditions. You also have more surface area exposed to the wind. In my experience, they don't have the instant yank of C ktes, but they do glide more gently.
