World Ice and Snow Sailing Championships/Sturgeon Stampede

Less than 2 months until we celebrate the 26th annual Sturgeon Stampede. This year has the vibe of becoming an epic year. Not only are we hosting the 35th annual World Ice and Snow Sailing Championships, but we have extended the Stampede to 4 days and added some new events including a kite fly-in, “Spear the Fatty” bike race, and “The Booty Run” Adventure Obstacle Run. To support all these awesome activities, We will have 2 heated shelters (WAK Shacks) and a huge heated tent for food, drink, music, and sponsor and vendor booths. Other activities will include tether ball, ice bowling, bag toss and a “Sturgeon Queen” contest. There will also be kite, wing and windsurf demos, and ice fishing and sturgeon spearing demos. On Friday we will light the ceremonial bonfire at dusk, and follow that with live music, fireworks, and lots of beer drinking. Saturday afternoon we will hold the Stampede “Big Air” Contest (Sunday alternate no wind day). Saturday night there will be an included awards dinner and program at the Retlaw Hotel. We have one of the WAK shacks out on the lake at the event site. Nothing like having a heated shelter on the lake to change in and to have a few beers in after riding. New site this year to move it closer to Fond du Lac. Should help to get more spectators and it will be easy to shuttle the riders back and forth from the hotel. The road is plowed out to the site and there is snow on the lake. The snow is a little crusty right now, but if we can get some more snow it will be really nice to ride. Ice ranged anywhere from 10-14" from shore to the site. We started plowing and flooding the ice rink already too. Things are definitely starting to shape up for the World Championships. Hope you guys are as excited as we are for this years event!

Can you camp on the ice at the site?

Um, I guess you could if you really wanted to. Many of the local hotels are offering deals for the riders. The Retlaw Hotel in downtown Fond du Lac has a $59/night deal with free breakfast each day.
